right now i am running the spring that came with my mil spec buffer tube from spikes tactical and the st-t2 buffer which i understand is just slightly lighter than an h2 buffer. it hits a little hard when using true milspec ammo (mk318, xm193, m855) in comparison to other commercial 5.56 factory ammo. i see alot of extra power buffer springs for sale at the usual places. is an extra power spring and a near h2 buffer too much for the 14.5" mid-length? i thought i might try one considering i have no idea what spring i am actually running. i can only assume it is standard mil spec because it came with a mil spec tube. i guess what im really asking is what do you consider to be the best spring/buffer set up for a 14.5" middy using true 5.56 ammo?
There are numerous threads here discussing this issue. One thing you omitted is who makes the upper as this can have an impact since not all manufacturers have the same specs.
Ultimately there is no 100% answer. You may need to experiment to find the niche you are looking for.
You could try using a real buffer like an H2 or H3 plus a blue Springco spring. The Vltor A5 may be an option for you as well if you want to spend the money.
sorry. it is a bcm upper using a vltor vis upper receiver. i plan on experimenting with the buffers. i hear folks talk about different buffers and the advantages/disadvantages all the time but, no ever seems to think about the spring? does the spring not matter? im actually looking at a springco red buffer spring but, im a little worried the red might be too much for a middy when using anything over an h buffer. am i wrong?
I don’t know from personal experience with the Midlength(I’ve used the Springco white and plain old BCM action springs in carbine length system with good results)but Springco states on their website that the “blue” spring functions well with the midlength system and a variety of buffers including the ST-T2. Probably you will still have to experiment.
USGI spring and H buffer work pretty good in mine.
Ditch the stupid spikes buffer. It doesn’t have real dead weights in it.
Using a H2 w/ springco blue spring caused short strokes w/ .223 in my DD 14.5 Middy. Switching to a USGI spring solved the issue. Looking at the springco blue vs the USGI, there is definitely more tension on the sprinco.
