Can anyone recommends a good source for Fox Labs OC spray, including the trainers for private purchase?
I only make a small order about once a year, but I have always ordered it straight from them.
I just call. They always think it is weird that I call and only order one or two cans, but they do not have problem with it.
JW, curious: why Fox and which product do you like?
Hrm, I just noticed the “Mean Green” stuff. New?
Because every police officer I’ve ever talked to that has qualed on it has reported the experience as “liquid pain”, meaning it was the nastiest OC they’d ever encountered.
and which product do you like?
I was looking at the 3 or 4 ounce models with the spring loaded flip top.
I usually order from galls.com. They are in Kentucky so it ships to Ohio fast.
I have sprayed (or been present for the spraying) of a butt load of folks…
Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) really does not seem to mean that much, depending on what test method is used and other things, the Scoville Value is probably a better gauge, but I subscribe to the idea that the most important number is the percentage of Major Capsaicinoids – there are five capsaicinoids, two of which are considered major capsaicinoids… this is not the percentage of OC based on weight, which is usually about 5-10% and advertised on the can, the percentage of MC usually runs from one half a percent or less, up to one percent or even more for the strongest sprays. Also, the type of carrier has a lot to do with how effective the ASR is…
So who is making the strongest stuff right now?
ETA-I realize thats like asking whether a .40 or a 9mm is better, I mean in terms of the measurement you spoke of.
fox labs oc is delicious on pizza and pasta and in bloody marys.
Sooo, what’s your fancy then?

Same here great service and fast shipping. I purchased the tripple threat for my daughter before I sent her off to college. OC/CS/ Bright orange dye. Told her if she ever had to use it to clear the area call 911 as soon as possible and tell the nice officer where it happened and to look for the idiot with the bright orange head attempting to remove his own eyes with his fingernails.
I am no OC expert, but I have been sprayed with BG-X (bodygaurd), Freeze +p and Fox Labs.
I know it is subjective and my sample size is small, but I will say that the Fox Labs hurts me worse than any of them. It did also seem to take longer to take effect than the others. The Freeze +p seemed to choke me a bit more than the others. Not sure why. I know I had more trouble fighting through the Fox Labs stuff than the other two.
That said, I have sprayed quite few people with the BG-X and it worked as advertised.
If you get exposed to OC enough you can fight through any of them. I can’t tell you how many time I have been sprayed by a fellow officer. It still hurts, but you quit being such a baby about it. ![]()
I’ve been sprayed many times, with most of the more popular products on the market. IMHO, there’s very little difference between them in the effects on target at time of application and shortly thereafter. Where they distinguish themselves is in the aftermath, mostly in pain, discomfort, and decon time. The latter are far less relevant than the former to the purposes we carry the stuff for. As in much else, there’s a point of diminishing return with product performance.
When contemplating products, be sure to ask manufacturers for their MSDS. If they say “huh?”, run. When they know what you’re talking about, some are still better about sending them than others. Some will ask questions as to why you want it. Asking some for a list of user groups using their product is informative too.
Also, be sure to test the product. Exposure is best. Check flammability as well, there are some products advertised as non-flammable that aren’t so much.
I’ve sprayed umpteen folks with Fed Labs/DefTec First Defense. They post their MSDS online, offer a food product warranty, I can’t make it catch fire, and the folks that get sprayed with it don’t care for it.
In the end, though, use what you like.
As pointed out… the various offerings seem to offer little more than a difference between “hurts really bad” and “hurts really, really bad” – the decon time is longer for brands with a higher MC content…
In my experience, the carrier has a lot to do with how quickly the ASR takes effect, but the most effective (alcohol based) is also verboten by most agencies.
There is a point of diminishing returns I guess… I had one brand that actually caused blistering and usually required an aid response for decon, the subject would literally writhe from the effect… not pretty; but it did not seem to be that much more effective than “lessor” brands, the use caused cross contamination that was very hard to work through and I even had personnel that I felt were reluctant to use it, due to the post exposure complications.
Not good…
I have used several brands… I like American Defense Red and have had very rapid response from Punch, but there are several that I would be fine with.
Thanks KL!
All the dudes I know around here roll with the Def-Tec stuff AFAIK, and seem to like it. The company is somewhat ‘local’ as well ![]()
That is some mean looking stuff.
