What are you guys having success running in your 14.5" middys? I am planning a 14.5" middy build over the next few weeks (pending sale of my 16" lightweight upper), and im curious what works best for you guys in your 14.5" middys in-terms of buffer weight, training ammo, etc. I would like to be able to run Wolf training ammo thru it for classes.
Also, anyone have a Daniel Defense 14.5" CHF middy that they have run any rounds thru yet? Curious if they got the gas port sized right on their offering.
When does BCM plan to offer a “BFH” version of their 14.5" mid?
My brother has Daniel Defense’s 14.5" midlength CHF barrel and it absolutely rocks. Sabre Defence was the only one to offer this combo for a long time, and they’re still tough to find at the right price.
I’ve got 2. The first is a Sabre barrel that was cut from 16" by ADCO and a pinned vortex. BCM stripped upper, Larue bolt and carrier, 1990ish pre ban Bushy lower (my first in 1993), FSB, Troy rail, Vltor stock, and Giesselle SSA. It ran through 2 classes, hard, it works well with just about anything including Wolf. I’ve tried both carbine and H bufffers. With Wolf I use a carbine buffer, “H” with standard pressure stuff or mil susplus.
The second is a DD 14.5 and it runs well. I’ve only put about a 1000 rounds through it so far but haven’t had any issues so far. This one has a Troy 11" extreme rail, cut down FSB, Colt stripped upper, DD lower, G&R LPK, Giesselle, SSA, ext. A-2 and Magpul stock. I haven’t tried wolf in this one ywet and probably won’t. “H” buffer seems to work well even though I’ve read it’s not needed.
I know that most advise against a 14.5 for a first AR but I prefer that length to any other. Just make sure you set it up the way you want it from the start.

Lower is a LRB with a CMMG LPK,no fancy trigger (yet) I want to get a Giesselle SSA,I have one in my 18 incher and its awesome,well worth the $$$$. Just running a standard M4 Stock & Buffer right now,I live in NY so it is NON collapsible,its just on there till my A1 shows up,hopefully this week. So far with this setup it has run great with both Wolf and my Reloads,I have put about 6,700 Rd’s down it so far !! Nice rifle,handles great and it is fairly lite !! I’m sure your rifle will be a great one,keep us posted on when she is done !!!
It really isn’t to bad,the Muzzle jump is reasonable & controllable I feel. Its not as good as some,but not as bad as others,I’m kinda a big guy and I can hold it pretty good,but over all I say the muzzle flip and rise is minimal !! I was so impressed with the noise and lack of side blast,(None) I can live with a little movement. Its just a nice push on your shoulder as far as recoil,& I figure most of that is cuz its kinda lite anyways !
Thanks for the tip on the Sully Stock,it is my Original choice,but just kind of swayed away from it,but it is still in the back of my mind. My “Mad” money is getting Low,so I ended up going with the A1 from Fulton,I have A1s on all my ARs (2 others) & will be putting one on this one when it shows up. One of my Favorite sayings is,"They are all exactly the same,Only different,if ya know what I mean,LOL !!! I have the same grip on all 3 and now the same stocks,it works good for me. I will keep my eyes peeled in the EE,maybe a Sully will show up !!!
I have a noveske afghan and a bcm 14.5 midlength. Both have H buffers with FA carriers. I have heard you can run into problems with PMC bronze ammo as it’s pretty weak. I haven’t run any through mine so I can’t tell you. The setup makes for a very soft shooting rifle.
I’m using the BCM 14.5" Middy for my duty weapon, and it is the smoothest shooting setup I’ve ever used. I’m clearing buildings with it on a regular basis, and am very happy. Note the below picture is the upper, but my duty layout is with a CTR and Aimpoint M4. I also use a handstop, not a VFG. I’m using a ST buffer which is pretty heavy, and no problems of any kind. I would imagine weaker loads would be fine with a lighter buffer if needed.

Thanks guys! I had a 16" LMT MRP barrel with a mid-length gas system that I had cut down to 14.5" a few years back. That thing ran like a raped ape! Im happy to see that there are some more options from viable companies like DD & BCM hitting the market in the 14.5" Middy configuration. I cant wait to get this project completed…
Can’t see how anyone could argue with that. For a more sexy look, I would consider a Sun Devil billet upper or a VLTOR MUR billet upper.
I have this DD upper, but changed out for a folding front sight / gas block, and it came w/o VFG or rear BUIS, and I put a CMMG Smith Vortesx FH with the little spikes on it:
Only 650 rds so far, and of course it has run perfectly.
