You know, that’s a good point. For some reason, I thought that it only came in midlength.
Still though, I love how the MOE-SL adds usable length and covers the FSB. I really dig the MOE-SL.
Unfortunately the carbine length FF RAS is discontinued. KAC has discontinued a lot of their legacy products lately.
Does anyone have any thoughts on DD Omega rail?
I came across them when I was looking at putting one on a FSB upper with the delta ring still intact. I forgot they existed for a while, and they’re still in production.
ETA: As in, how would you compare them to a KAC RAS? I know they come in MLOK and Picatinny
I forgot about that one. It was always a good option years ago. For me, again, the deal breaker was the I beam profile. (Tall bottom rail). I hate that.
As far as these plastic variants being suggested? I wouldn’t put that crap on a 22 LR AR. Real hand guards are just not that expensive.
Glocks are made of plastic, as well. So is the grip on your AR, and the sling. The Magpul MOE is perfectly suitable for anyone desiring a drop in that doesn’t own a PEQ. Its not delicate, and it does exactly what handguards should do, well.
If I didn’t own a PEQ, I’d honestly choose it over the KAC M4 RAS, even for the same price. And yeah, I’ve got both.
I hope not, it and the mcmr are my go-tos
True. But to me it’s like a man wearing sweat pants or flip flops out in public.
Just NO!
Hahaha. Yeah, I feel that. I think any handguard mentioned so far would do what the OP wants, just fine. He just has to figure out how much time and money he wants to pull from his range budget.
The Omega rail solves the problem of a non free floating system and is the best easy replacement. On and off in minutes and requires no further mods. I had one on a Colt and it was the best simple mod I did.
I surmised the OP’s Colt is non free floating but not sure what route he’s gonna take to optimize his AR…
I won’t buy anything DD after the universal background support then flip flop as he showed his true colors. Too many other options and besides, the Ras and Centurion are among the best here.
Hold the hell on there mister!
I’ll have you know, I wore sweatpants out last night, at a buffet!
You have to have expandable attire in that situation.
At least we’re on the same sheet of music!
If you leave emotion and feelings out of the equation, the Magpul handguards probably don’t get enough credit for how well they do what they do. They’re inexpensive, and nothing is better across the board at not transferring heat to your hands. I’m a sucker for 1913 quad rails so that’s what I primarily use, and while quads take a lot more time to heat up than skinny MLOK rails, once they do they take a long time to cool down. I run the thick Daniel Defense rail covers and those are the best ladder panels that aren’t stupid thick like the KAC panels.
I have the MOE SL handguard on a complete Andro Corp 10.3 upper and it’s a great handguard. I also run the Magpul AK handguards on most of my AKs, the slightly longer version without the cutout for the sling loop on the handguard retainer. Diehard AK purists don’t like to hear it, but they’re the best thing going for a simple fighting AK setup. I tried a Zhukov handguard, but it was a full pound and made an already front heavy gun even more front heavy.
Exactly. Metal drop in handguards generally add weight and not much else for most shooters. A MOE-SL will save weight, improve ergonomics, protect from heat, allow the proper mounting of accessories, and provide more gripping real estate.
The MOE-SL or similar plastic handguards are therefore the superior choice for drop-in options.
If not looking for something simple and drop in, however, then yes of course there are better options. A 12" or 13" slim MLOK rail like the BCM MCMR, for example, would be a fantastic choice.
Obviously strictly personal preference, but I actually like the good old KAC panels. I run chinese rip-off LaRue clips and ladder covers too, but the fat KAC never bugged me.
Well said, and we have similar habits these days. No one has mentioned it yet, so I will: they have heat shields.
Sometimes it comes down to personal ergonomics as well.
I’m not “uge” and don’t have “uge” hands. I literally can’t get a decent grip on those large hand guards, to the point where they make a rifle more difficult for me to shoot. The gorilla’s in the crowd aren’t going to experience that issue.
I have them on my MK18 MOD 0 upper with the RAS, but purely for the early GWOT aesthetics.
That’s certainly the difference maker. My nephew put a drop in polymer handguard that looked like a blatant rip off of Magpuls and it didn’t have heat shields. That thing got so hot the plastic was pliable. I can’t remember the brand, but I remember they made a bunch of goofy goober looking stocks and grips too.
Gorilla hand gang here. My hands are thick and wide from years of hard labor but I don’t have long fingers. My hands completely swallow a G17 grip, G19 is too short for my liking. I have a harder time with skinny MLOK rails, but the wide handguards just feel awkward, like I’m not getting a full purchase. My favorite rail is the DD RIS II, followed by the Centurion C4 FSB cut out.
