I am about ready to pick up an LMT unit, but I wanted to see if anybody has any feedback on other (folding?) options.
I tend to prefer an absolute cowitness, and right now I usually run my BUIS permanently deployed- so the LMT seems like a natural. Still, I’ve been toying with the idea of adding an EOTech magnifier at some point, so a folding unit might make sense too.
Field elevation adjustment on a back up sight is irrelevant.
Even when irons were the primary sights on military rifles, the Europeans had the right idea and left their rifles with either none or very basic elevation adjustment.
I ASSume the LaRue is adjustable for windage? I’ve seen a photo (don’t know anybody who has a live unit to check out) but it did not have enough detail to make that determination. Off to the website, I guess…
Alpha Sierra is correct. You really don’t need that kind of adjustment on a BUIS. Just one more thing to go wrong. But if you prefer it, the LMT is a good quality choice.
Troy, MI have a good reputation for folders. MI has recently come out with a low profile one that should easily fit underneath an optic.
I’m not sure if you stayed with a fixed BUIS, if there would be enough room for a magnifier and an EoTech or Aimpoint, even if you used a cantilever mount. If you ran a MRP you’d have enough space, but if you believe a magnifier is in your future, I’d definitely go with a folder. If you’re going to stay with just the Aimpoint or EoTech, then you could keep your fixed BUIS.
Yes, but not with a protruding knob that you can grasp with your fingers.
If you went to Larue’s website you probably saw that the windage adjustment knob is flush with the body and requires some sort of tool (coin, leatherman, cartridge rim) to turn.
The 600m? Yeah, that’s height and windage adjustable. The 300 is just windage adjustable and I just love mine. Very low profile and quick enough to deploy. Nothing fancy but does the job.
Here is a Guide I put together showing various BUIS, it needs a little updating, but it should give you a bunch of different pictures along with some basic info regarding each of the different BUIS featured.
Hopefully its of some help for you. “Best” is a subjective term, and what works for me may not be the best for you.
I’ve seen some hit or miss BUIS come from Troy. I like their units, but this is a pretty serious example of a unit completely failing.
Faulty Troy BUIS:
Locking ball detent isn’t locked into anything, but rather the adjustment wheel spins freely:
After using Ameetech (sp?), KAC, GG&G, ARMS, Diopter, I tend to always go back to the ARMS #40. Honestly though, I think that BUIS are a preference issue…as long as they function as they should, not a whole lot makes one better than the other.
Truth be told, I’m not sure what the method of malfunction was on it We were in the midst of a pretty fast paced course so we just tore it off and threw another one on. It was on a buddy’s M4 not mine…so I didn’t really have an opportunity to take it apart and tinker like I would’ve liked to.
Troy’s top-notch customer service replaced the BUIS promptly though.
