Best 6920 Assessory?

I plan on purchasing a Colt 6920 and 1000rds. or ammo in the near future. The reputation of this AR rifle is legendary.

This rifle will be used for home defense, range and just general plinking. I know that a lesser rifle would fill this bill but a very wise man once told me that what ever you are going to buy consider what you can afford and then and spend a little more to get the best.

What is the one assessory, upgrade, add on,( not counting optics), that you would spend your money on?

I’m not in the military or have I ever been in LE so this will be my first AR.

A flashlight.

More ammo, they like to eat:D

A carbine class.

Sorry, had to say it.

A white light is important for a defensive use gun.

Grant, I will be purchasing my rifle from G&R, what would you suggest in terms of a rail and light and can you install before you ship?

+1 A good brand weapon light (you got it, get it from Grant, I got mine from him).

A good drop in rails is also recommended so your light could be mounted properly in my opinion.

Don’t forget plenty of good USGI 30 rd mags (at least 14 to 20)and a good sling like the Blue Force Gear Vickers VCAS two point sling.

It’s the truth. Owning a violin doesn’t make one a musician; training and practice do. Sully includes a coupon for a 2-day class with his guns. Good marketing.

That said, you need a light, too.

Yes, I would love to attend a good class and I hope to do so in the future. One that includes rifle maintenance and basic fundamentals. Anybody know of one in central Alabama?

We can do any rail you want (LT/DD/VLTOR/MI/Troy/SF/KAC).

I generally like to go with a one piece FF rail if at possible.

Grant, please rate a free float rail system good, better, best, in the proper length so that I can get a price picture.

                                                               Thanks Tim:cool:

+1 on the carbine class, the Colt is no good if you cant use it.

Tim,

I really recommend that you search, and read a bit. Inform yourself and then continue.

Its kinda hard to get all your info in one thread… and even harder to start asking “Whats the best 1st mod?” becuase everyone’s intended use may vary.

Try to read some of the build threads… there are some around. A good one was recently posted by Rob_S… I suggest you read up.

Not all are accessories, I’d do this is this order:

  1. good mags (get good ones like BCM mags or Magpul PMAGs, get at least 20)
  2. good training
  3. a good white light
  4. after getting a good optic, mount and back up rear sight, I’d get a FF rail (DD, Troy or LaRue)

I would prioritize purchases to have the greatest effect on you being able to manipulate, maintain and effectively deploy the thing.

I don’t know how familair you are with the AR system.

Read the manual, so you know without hesitation, the parts and what they do.

Take it apart to clean and lube it properly. Which means proper equipment for that.

I would hold off on doing any drills until you are shown the fundementals and how to perform certain task(manipulation) Then you can practice the accuracy and speed drills.

Get enough magazines to attend a class, I would say six, a riggers belt, a Molle capatable pouch to hold 2-4 mags and some ammunition for the class. The gear is basic to get started and learn to use the gun verses how much gear you’ve invested in, get that stuff later. A good sling. worry about the light, rails and optics later. For the intent of this weapon, an Aimpoint, fixed rear BUIS and a simple rail for a light is it in my opinion.

The biggest thing I see problems from are the inability of the user to maintain the weapon and effectively manipulate the thing to deploy it. All training issues, just get the proper training, retain it through the right practice and re-training.

LT 7.0 Best
DD LR 7.0 Best
DD 7.0 Better
CASV Better
TROY MRF-C Good
MI #17 Good

There are of course my personal opinion and are worth what you paid for them.

I like the DD 9.5" Lite Rail which has extended bottom and side rails that extend to the end of the FSB. I might be putting one of these on my Colt. For my shooting style they work well. Support hand is extended to the end of the rail/tube.

-Blue Force Gear VCAS Sling

-Weapon mounted flashlight (I would highly recommend at least 100 lumens, but 65 will usually do for “home defense”).

-Quality red dot optic (I would highly recommend an Aimpoint in a Larue mount).

In that order. I will second the sentiments that a Carbine Operator class from a good instructor is probably the wisest investment you can make.

As Mark pointed out, proper cleaning and lubrication is a must. Read Pat Rogers article on this subject here: http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=31
