Beretta Cx4 Storm 9mm

Has anyone tried to run a Beretta Cx4 Storm (9mm) through a carbine class? If so, how did it handle (i.e., malfunctions)? Can it handle the high round count?

Some of us ran one though portions of a lowlight class last year with LAV and Ken Hackathorn. I dont recall anyone having issues with it, other than it being a love it or hate it carbine.

I havent had any issues with mine, but I’ve yet to run it through a full carbine class.

I considered getting one… debated Pistol Caliber vs. the .223/5.56

In the end I just ordered an AR.

I’d rock one if I had the funds though…

From a pure economics point of view (i.e., 9mm is cheaper than 5.56mm), I’m considering running a 9mm carbine in classes. I’m still trying to decide a Colt AR6450 vs. RRA 9mm vs. Cx4. If the Cx4 can take the abuse then it’s clearly the “economic” winner. However, I don’t want the mistake of thinking I’m saving $$$ and ended up costing more in the end.

The two instructors I use both allow 9mm, so that isn’t a concern when considering 9mm vs. 5.56mm. Reliability for carbine classed is a concern though…

From my point of view, you would probably get more out of the class (bang for buck) if you brought the rifle you wanted to improve your skills with than you would if you use the Storm as a stand-in.

Some drills and movements can be specific to the firearm you are using. Locking back the bolt and changing magazines are different sets of motions when comparing an AR to the Storm. I do not mean that the stuff cannot be adapted over but imagine an AR specific drill or movement that you change up for the Storm you brought to class and then having to change it back to what you think the instructor said a week, a month, or a longer period of time after the class.

If you ultimately intend to use an AR and need to go with 9mm due to economic considerations, I believe a 9mm variant of the AR would be a better choice than the Storm for the class.

I’ve heard some other people running the cx4 in a course with no issues. I simply purchased mine due to the cost/availability of a 9mm AR platform, although it would’ve been a great weapon to have. After holding the cx4 and seeing how light/maneuverable it was and the fact that it had all the rails, a Tango stubby VFG, 2 17rd and 2 extra 20rd mags all for under $700 I jumped on it. I threw my TLR-1/pressure pad/VFG onto it and threw the Tango stubby on my LMT. It’s given me no issues, and after adding a red dot to it the groups I get at the range are just awesome. I know my AR will have it’s place—50yds and out, but inside that I’d much rather use the Beretta. The recoil on the weapon is almost nonexistent, and after shooting it you’ll probably fall in love with it.

Thanks; that’s great to hear. I just purchased a Cx4…I haven’t heard of any problems with the 9mm. I guess people or love it or hate it, but I think it is great for what it is. I look forward to running it through some carbine classed (ammo availability permitting!).

I just ran my CX4 through a portion of this year’s M$C moderator course. It ran like a champ and was more accurate than I expected in the environment I was using it in. I added some SierraPappa replacement parts to the gun and it paid off in spades.

I bought a Cx4 for my wife, and now I want one. It is definitely a very handy rifle, but the pistol controls on a rifle are weird for me.

Chris - if you have pics of the mods … would be appreciated!

Here is an older pic of the gun:

Since that photo has been taken, I’ve ditched the ARMS mount and went with the lowest “scout” mount I could find. The lower mount allows me to co-witness with the irons if I want. Since the rear sight on the CX4 sucks though, I just keep it folded down and use the tube of the AImpoint as a giant ghost ring with the front should the optic fail.

The mods done to the gun are all internal and include:

metal replacement hammer

Adjustable trigger

Medium weight hammer spring

The parts can all be found here or at Brownells. For me, the mods did away with all of the major complaints I had about the gun.

I had one for a while and enjoyed shooting it. It had a peculiar problem though. Some 9mm loads would spit powder residue out the left side of the weapon onto my cheek as it cycled. Ouch. The solution, in my experience, was to shoot 147 gr. loads as there seemed to be no issue with them. The worst seemed to be +P and any 115 gr. loads. Perhaps the problem was bolt velocity dependent. If I had kept the gun, I was thinking of placing some sort of shield over the left hand ejection port.

I shoot mainly 115gr through the gun and fell some gas on my cheek from time to time also. It isnt a constant issue with my gun though.
