Beretta 92D

I have a soft spot for tools that work (ok, and I do appreciate “Old World” craftsmanship, wherever it’s executed)…

While I appreciate, enjoy, trust and use my Beretta 92D, without a doubt I clearly perform better in most environments with my Glocks-specifically my Glock G17, G19, G21, and G34.

In tracking my performance with all these guns over the years of competition, there’s an indisputable reality for me that quickly manifests itself: I shoot better, and improve more quickly with my Glocks than any other platform to date. In the two most recent/consecutive IDPA matches that I 've shot, I’ve posted my two most accurate IDPA matches to date with my G34-and in the second (most recent) my absolute most accurate, with only 17 points down in a 6-stage match.

While certainly not the be-all-and-end-all of performance evaluation, shooting similar matches over time (for me, that’s primarily IDPA and GSSF) gives me a pretty objective evaluation of both my skill set and how I do with a given gun/platform. The empirical evidence in pretty compelling: I do my best, and most consistant work with my Glocks.

The Beretta 92D is a trusted weapon, and does yeomanry work as a nightstand gun, where I prefer it’s smooth, but significantly heavier/longer triggerpull characteristics-in this situation, I find it to be more ideal, particularly if my motor skills are a bit unsynchronized (and I’m probably going to be more clumsy) upon waking from sleep; due to it’s simplicity and trigger, it’s also an ideal to pass to my wife if needed. I do plan on using the 92D in one major match this year, however, so I’ll make it a more heavily used/carried gun during the work-up to that match.

The real upshot of all of this is the realization that my 1911-pattern pistol guns have pretty much been relegated to the status of occassional use/hobby guns, due to my overwhelmingly superior performance/index with my Glocks.

And to directly answer the question, I’m far more likely to carry one of the Glocks; which specific one is a bit situationally dependant, but overall a G19 seems to get carried most frequently, followed by the G21, G17, and G34, pretty much in that order.

Best, Jon

My experiences with a D model Beretta is roughly the same as JonInWA. I have been shooting a 96D since last October pretty exclusively and picked up my G22 for the first time in a while a couple weeks ago. The Glock feels and visually appears to be more under control at speed. The shot timer for the most part agrees, although the difference is not as big as it looks from behind the gun, only about half a tenth.

Of all the guns I’ve owned and sold, my 92FS is the one I really regret selling.

What is so amazing, that after more than two decades, it is hard to beat a Glock – a pistol developed by someone with no experience building firearms. S&W, with the M&P, despite so much promise, seems to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with their 9mm accuracy issues.

At Rogers this week, there is only one shooter, between the students and instructors, using anything but a Glock or M&P. I sure hope the FNS-9 turns out well, as it will hopefully combine the ergonomic advantages of the M&P with Glock Gen 4 or better accuracy.

I do appreciate your wringing out these interesting firearms, that have caught my interest, as you have saved me time and money. It is always reaffirming and disappointing that there is no short cut to improved performance that a G17 and a lot of ammo won’t trump.
