Benelli... What did I just get myself into?

Well, I just traded into a Benelli M1 Super 90. I would up giving 675 for it , that’s what I had in the trade. Looking around I think I did pretty well in that aspect.

As far as the gun itself goes, do they rock as much as everybody says they do? It seems like Benelli is the premier autoloader company. I have a few buddies with Super Novas that they’ve put through hell duck hunting, and they work great. Of course, this won’t be as reliable as a pump, but with proper maintenance should this run pretty well for me? Will it be reliable in the long run?

My buddy was talking all kinds of shit on them, but he’s the worlds biggest brand fanboy homo, so I took it with a grain of salt. (He only shoots Sigs, and anything else is a total piece of trash… lol)

I’m a huge fan of the earlier H&K / VA import M1’s…have a field model for quail and waterfowl and the combat version.

They have been solid guns.

I am a benelli guy when it comes to auto loading scatter guns, but will tell you that I have talked to several outfitters from Mexico and Argentina and they all said the only one that holds up is the original Beretta 390. The only downside to this model is the gas system is so balanced, you are limited to only 4 shells.

Aren’t we all to a certain degree? When it comes to cars, clothes, guns, etc etc…

Good move, and a decent price. I ended up giving $900 for my M1 Super 90 delivered, and while that was a bit pricier, I’ve no regrets!

I got an actual Benelli choke tube, extended mag, sling, and sidesaddle with mine - did any extra goodies come with yours?

I got it with an 8 shot extension, only the one choke though. It’s a 26 inch barrel, so I thought it was weird he added the extension, but oh well. I traded an Hk p30L for it, if anybody cares.

And yeah, we can all be brand snobs, but most of us keep it within reason, i.e. I shoot a Sig, but if Glocks work for you they’re great too

I’m waiting for my ffl to get his shit together and transfer my benelli m2. I’ve never shot a semiauto shotgun, so this will be a new experience. My plan is to set it up for 3-gun in the hopes that I will actually find a range close enough with matches to attend. Check back when you get it and have a chance to shoot it. I don’t know much about these animals, so I’m trying to soak up the ins and outs.

I just saw a Super 90 in my local pawn shop yesterday. $650 and it’s in pretty good shape, 18" with ghost rings. I’m really thinking about buying but I don’t need two, and it’s not really enough to pick up with the intent to sell.

I love the M1S90 though!

Yup. Benellis are awesome, and in my experience they sells themselves, a clear indication to how awesome they are. I let three of my friends shoot my Benelli and they all want one. One has his own already. The other didn’t want to give it back.

I have a Montrafeltro(sp?) Silver that I use for sporting clays and have shot well over 2000 rounds before cleaning it and it has worked just fine. I hope to see an M4 in my future soon.

But congrats on the M1 it’s an excellent gun.

I’ve always been a Remington 1100 gas auto shotgun fan starting with a bicentennial 12 ga. skeet gun in 1976, another 1100 later on which I had reblued and did the wood refinishing myself. I sold that second 1100 and bought an 1187 later on. I had it for several years and made the mistake of having it ported. That was a mistake in the dove fields I hunted. Sold it and continued to use the Ithaca SKB O/U 500 I purchased years ago. Eventually sold that to my best friend.

We use Rem. 870’s in our department so I picked up one in turkey persuasion for turkey hunting. After a couple of years of using it I sold it and ordered a camo Benelli M1 field with 22" barrel. I added a Rhino screw-in choke and haven’t looked back. My longest turkey kills have been 62 and 65 yards with Winchester 3" Supreme 4 shot shells. I use to turn my nose up at inertia shotguns after firing a Franchi in the early 70’s and preferred my SKB to that by a long shot. The Benelli just seems to be a different shotgun, probably a little heavier than that Franchi but I am sold. I’ve handeled the Super 90 Tactical with and without the pistol grip and just haven’t run into one when I had the money with me. One of these days…

That is cool! Wish I woulda got lucky with an Hk import!

I’ve got 4 HK imports and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

It wasn’t my initial intent but as I have acquired them, I’ve pretty much set them up for specialized purposes…1 for work (18.5" ghost ring M-1), 1 scoped for deer (M-1 w/21" rifled barrel) and the other two for field (26" M-1 and 28" Montefeltro).

I wanted consistency for all of my shotgun needs!

I have a M1 S90 tactical. Mine was only about 95% with cheap shells. Switching to better quality Win. AA 1 1/8 1300 fps loads, keeping the bolt carrier rails a bit wet made it 100%. Since I use it in 3-gun I had the carrier welded up so it wouldn’t destroy my thumbs.

I have had 3 of the older HK M1 super 90’s and they were all great guns. I started leaning to the M4 super90’s. Kick a little less then the inertia driven. I have paperwork coming next month for the 14in sbs M4 super 90 with collapsible stock and all. I think I am going to like this one a ton.

I have 5 Benellis in total and all run without issue. Three of the HK cheat loaders, one Super Black Eagle and a 20ga Montefeltro that I believe is the greatest 20ga gas gun ever made! All have seen field, waterfowl and 3 Gun use.

You did well especially with the 26" extended tube. You can do anything with it from clays to live birds.

As far as your Sig buddy goes. Remind him that great shotguns end in vowels!

Nice pickup. My buddy runs a Benelli m1 against me in three gun.

Anybody ever deal with Michael Murphy & Sons? It seems as though they lied when they told me the benelli was in stock. Now it will be a 2-3 week wait at best for an overseas shipment. They already have my payment, so I’m wondering if they are a decent outfit or if I need to begin the fight to get my money back.

To the OP,

I have a M1S90 that I love. It is a HK marked version that can be ghost loaded on the carrier, giving me 7+1+1 for 9 rounds in an 18.5" barrel. That rocks.

As far as how they run, I found a Wolff power spring of 25% increase was the ticket to get mine to feed cheap target loads. I remember reading something a long time ago on the first few batches of inertia springs going bad pretty quick. After the Wolff +25% spring it eats everything all day long.

The other thing I have found is the pistol grip seems to give people some grief for some reason in reliability. There is a lot of talk about it over on the Benelli forum. However, the spring usually takes care of eating up the light target loads.

Lastly, watch your weight… they are sensitive to how much weight they can take on before they start to hiccup on feeding as the inertia drive is pretty dialed in. That said, I did add a SF light and a titanium bolt handle, Mesa Side Saddle a little bit of grip tape :)… runs like a top.

I have had an M1S90 for years and have never had any issues. Great gun!

I have had mine for a number of years now and it has never failed to shoot even with cheap bird shot loads from WalMart. It’s an M1 S90 Tactical that I special ordered. At the time I paid $695.00 for it and thought it was a bargain at that price. If I saw one at a pawn shop for $650.00 I would be toting a new to me M1 to the house.
