Trying to decide whether to put a RMR on my M2 and M4, I like the optic but can’t decide if it would be worth the costs. I would use the Scalarworks mount on both guns!
I have used red dots on shotguns for many years. They are fast and accurate. If used on firearms that may be needed to save someone’s life, I would only recommend the combat-tested ones made by companies such as EOTech, Aimpoint and Trjicon.
They also solve any cross-dominance issues. (Over 20% of the population is cross-dominant.)
Downsides are that you might need a higher cheek weld. (I use the Mesa Urbino stock with the stock riser on my M4 to accommodate my Aimpoint T1 sight.) The other downside is that red dots will be less precise as one gets older because the amount of us with creeping astigmatism will find it harder and harder to see only one dot.
This is an issue that will confront most of us at some point in our lives. As much as I love red dots and think they are IDEAL for shotguns, they don’t always work for everyone and for every firearm. For example, I would struggle with a 1X red dot on a carbine.
I use an Eotech EXPS 3 on my M2 with Urbino stock and rail. It’s excellent
I had a dual illumination model RMR (fiber and tridium) the dot was not bright enough for day use. I am extremely surprised that this model is as popular as it is. Other red dots I have owned and feel are far superior are Holosun (t1 clone) and Burris fastfire. If your keen on the tried and tested RMR I would definitely go with a battery powered model.
If you don’t require go to war level reliability check out the HoloSun 503c it has a 2moa dot and circle dot eotech style reticle. T1 clone. HoloSun makes the red dots for primary arms which are popular and well reviewed. I think this optic would be at home on a shotgun.

I’ve been using the scalarworks mount + RMR06 on my Benelli M4 for a couple months now and I’m happy with the combination. There’s no real learning curve since you can get behind the optic with the same stock and the same cheekweld. The iron sight picture is a little different because the RMR body blocks the bottom half of the rear aperture but the irons are still very usable if the optic does go down.
When Scalarworks released their rail for the Benelli last Oct, I jumped on it and as you added the RMR06. It also shaved weight off the Benelli, plus the benefit of co-witness, I am a happy camper
Thanks for the inputs, I’ll probably do the M4 first with a RMR, then M2. I have a spare RMR01 right now. I like the one FF3 I have on a FNX Tactical but use the RMRs on several pistols, all are battery, didn’t care for the dual illuminated!
I cant offer any advice reference the RMR, but my M4 became everything it was destined to be when I added a T1 on a shortmount.
Having previously used an RMR on this shotgun, I couldn’t agree more.

I’ve never tried an optic on a shotgun, but I also never thought of the cross dominance issue. I can see how it would be fast but I prefer my shotgun to follow the KISS rule.
