Interesting. Based on the layout of my house I don’t want to have to walk to my closet as it is not that close to my bed and I don’t want that level of exposed rifle in my bed room. So that’s probably not a good choice for me but thank you for the suggestion.
Wow that 1242 RLS is really really slick. That might be exactly what I need. Not sure how I feel about magnetic keys though. What if you can find the key in the moment of need? I like it a lot though.
My thought (I don’t have one yet) is that I would keep it locked up when I was not in the room, and have it unlocked when I went to bed.
I think the 1242 RLS might be new or I haven’t seen it yet. The only reason I don’t have one is because I rent in a house with plaster and lathe and the work to do the inserts is just too much PITA, even though the landlord said he didn’t mind as long as it looked good when I left (which would pretty much mean leaving the insert in place). The 1242 just jumped to the top of my wish list.
I just posted this in the handgun forum, as the cabinets he has on his website are more geared toward a pistol, but he does do custom work as well. He probably can’t make a custom enclosure as cheap as the mass produced stuff, but it would probably be exactly what you want. As Sensei pointed out, this option won’t provide fire protection though.
I think the corner cabinet/safe from Sentry Safe would be ideal. Locks up your AR and gives you a spot for a pistol, and gives you a tray on top for phone, light, etc…
