Be A Gun Manufacturer CEO For A Day

Had enough doom and gloom for the weekend- time for a little fun.
So I was inspired by a post I read on another forum to totally steal their idea and try it out here.
I just breezed through, so any blatant similarities/plagiarisms are totally unintentional.

The basis- if you could run ANY gun manufacturer, what would you do? Keep? Change? Discontinue?
OR if none of the existing manufacturers appeals to you, I’m going to add to this and say “if you could start your own company instead of taking over an existing one, what would you make?”

Try to keep it somewhat realistic- yes, we’d all like a Dethray 2000, but not going to happen ever… :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll jump in first;

Seize control of the production of Rem. 700s. Stop fitting them out with the awful hogue stocks. Raise the price slightly, fit it with a usable stock, like a B&C Medalist or similar from the factory, and tell everyone to suck it up.

Start a “Remington Semi-Custom Shop and produce a REAL tactical precision R700- I’ve hung around on SH enough to generalize what everyone seems to want in that area- Rem had an opportunity with the AAC-SD, but imho, botched it in that they didn’t go far enough, and it still needs work from the factory.
The NEW “Tactical 700 Package” would be semi-customizable, in that instead of 20 different versions of the same gun, NONE of which have all the features you want in one package, there would be ONE gun with 20 different options- kind of like the way you can configure an AI on their site.
Your choice of say,20-24” barrels, standard or fluted, threaded, a couple major chamberings- 308, 260, 6.whatever, etc., twist rates, better stock choices, better QC, and an AI/Alpha Ind. compatible DBM setup (unlike FN, which uses proprietary mags). For a small extra price, offer cerakoting in say, black, tan, OD and grey. For less, offer just the barreled action.
All for less than a GAP, which I’ve pretty much just described…
Bascially, a “budget” Tac bolt gun- for folks lik the people we all know in the AR world who legitimately can’t afford a DD/BCM/etc. but still want a viable quality alternative that will still have enough of the tacticool options they want to interest them, while keeping R700 compatibility. Rem 700’s are no longer “just” your dad’s huntin’ rifle- haven’t been for a long time. Rem is apparently trying to get current with their “attempts” at AR building and “tactical” shotguns- why not go all the way and offer a solid precision rifle?
/rant

If I started my own company…
Produce a mag-fed pump shotgun.
Produce a mag-fed semi-shotgun with the reliabilty of a Saiga/M4 but with a lock-back feature so you don’t need 3 hands to reload, for less than either option would cost.
Because reloading with single rounds is bullshit…

If I ruled the world- make every new manufacture handgun compatible with Glock mags. This would reduce the number of handguns that fail due to sucky mags, as well as bring the cost down- I’m damn tired of paying double to triple of what a decent AR mag costs for 1 pistol mag, not to mention seperate times if you own more than 1 type of handgun.

Your ideas?

Sig: I would eliminate all the gimmicky guns and have them refocus on quality in the hopes of getting them back to the good old days. I’ve always loved the ergos of the 220 and 226. Now that they offer DAK and SAO versions, I really want a couple. I’d also bring back the 225, and all pistols would ship with Trijicon HD’s in orange.

Glock, introducing our new line of rifles…

Colt… Drop production of everything but Government Models (70 & 80 Series), Combat Commanders (70 & 80 Series), Gold Cups (70 & 80 Series) and reintroduce a no frills Light Weight Commander (70 & 80 Series). Continue to refine the product quality and standards…

A guy can dream can’t he?

what no love for the diamond plate .380s and golden dragon x5s?

I kid I kid…

Food for thought: Consider the ramifications of running the manufacturer as a businessman, a gun enthusiast, or both, and the long term viability of the company with your decisions.

MY list:

  1. Re-introduce the Remington Model 788…with MINOR improvements…a no rattle magwell, maybe an adjustable trigger.
  2. STOP…TODAY…putting MIM parts on all guns. I know I know…save your arguments, this is MY list.
  3. Bring back the Stevens 311 line of old double barrel shotty’s.
  4. FIX THE ****ING GLOCKS.
  5. Bring back some classic pistols/revolvers of the past…HI-STANDARD .22’s, Woodsman’s, Diamondbacks, ect.
  6. STOP putting polymer every damn where! Like on 10/22 trigger housings and such.
  7. Bring back a 100% focus on QUALITY, FIT & FINISH. We had GORGEOUS Royal blue finishes and such for decades, they sold every one they ever made, but all a sudden its “cost prohibitive” or some shit?
  8. Wish we could see some of the old VERY accurate .22 bolt guns again, like the old H&R’s, the great Mossberg trainers, and old those grand old .22’s with the fabulous adjustable peep sights. I love the old martially marked .22’s.
9.Finally…can we have ONE freakin thing made today that ISNT “tactical and/or mil-spec”?! My God I hate those terms.

That is what kept me from typing a 5 page list. With that in mind, FN would still start knocking out the FAL and FNC series again.

I would run Apple and acquire DARPA through a hostile takeover.

Then phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range would be under every tree in time for Christmas!

I would either run Sig Sauer, FN, or HK.

Sig:

  • Shitcan the 556/551a1 product line, but keep producing hammers, triggers, sears, gas pistons, and bolt carriers here in the US.
  • Import the following in as pistols: 551-2 short barrel, 553-2 short barrel, 553-2 long barrel. Register them as SBRs once in the US, add requisite QUALITY US made parts for 922(r).
  • Import the following sporterized rifles: 551-2 long barrel, 550-2, 751 SAPR. De-sporterize and add requisite QUALITY US parts for 922(r).
  • Shitcan all the poor QC special model pistols they offer, focus instead on the 220, 226, 228, and 229 line.
  • Import Swiss made P210s.

FN:

  • Reintroduce the FNC and sell spare parts. These would either be built stateside or in Belgium, imported as Sporters and de sporterized with the requisite US parts. I would take a play from the Swedes and offer variants similar to the AK5d (SBR), AK5C (SBR), as well as a 16" title-1 model.
  • Introduce a scaled down FNC in 9x19, 40S&W, 45 ACP. (I want one for my S&H autosear). The lower on this would use HK UMP mags.

HK:
I would offer the following to the US market:

  • Complete semiauto 416A5 in SBR and title-1 format
  • Semiauto mp7 SBRs
  • Semiauto UMP SBRs
  • Semiauto G36C SBRs, G36K SBRs, and title-1 G36Es.
  • Bring back the entire 9x roller lock series and offer pistols, SBRs and title-1 rifles

WHAT!? No ARs?
Blasphemer!

I can only see good things coming from the Sig suggestion… :stuck_out_tongue:

A cosmetically updated version of a FAL, with the old-school awesomeness… Ermaghgerd!

Glock…

Fix all the problematic “improvements”.

A single stack 9mm in all three frame/barrel sizes, with a corresponding slide thickness reduction.

An almost single stack 34/35 sized gun in .45ACP, that would hold exactly 10+1.

A 5.56 rifle to rule the world.

A G-19 with a 17 slide.

A G-26 with a 19 slide.

Reintroduce the Gen-2 as a no frills “value line”.

Undercut trigger guards on all pistols.

A built in thumb shelf forward of the takedown bar on all pistols.

An increase in production capacity to correspond with the increased demand.

Did I miss anything?

H&K: Move the company to the USA along with all their factories, machinery, and employees. Then, make proper civilian versions of their military weapons (i.e. almost no changes besides being semi)… For example, legit HK416 uppers for $800 or so and full 416s (415?s) minus auto sear and pin and a semi trigger for around $1250-1500.

I second the Stevens SxS shotgun. Make mine a 20 please

Put Marlin back to rights

Make sure the original PPQ and mags were available

Build quality 03-A3s with a C stock

Then build quality AKs in the Galil pattern. Couple of other guys have already covered the FAL

I would really like to see someone clever take the FAL back to the design phase and see what could come of the platform.
It has a lot of potential.

Walther

Consolidate and center production around the PPQ line. Then scale the pistol up, down, and sideways. Produce a .45. Put out a single stack 9mm & .40. Create a 4.5" barrel length to fit between the 5" and 4". Keep the PPX and PPS lines going as alternatives but in low volume numbers. I’d also start having decent sights made in the US, and as soon as the pistols clear customs, swap out the plastic ones for metal ones. I’d also do what I could to build relationships with sight makers. Start making spare parts more available. Continue to make the PPQ M1 line as it stands now, but in limited quantities. Pump up the marketing budget, educate Germany that the US market is quite different from the European market.

SIG:

Shitcan all of the 'tard pistols, and stick with the mainstay P-series, and introduce SAO versions of all of them.
Manufacture the 556/A1 lines to the Swiss spec.
Import P210.
Discontinue gas piston rifles.
Manufacture the M400 to mil spec.
Discontinue all of the gimmicky Chinese red dot crap.
Trijicon HD sights would be standard on all pistols.

HK:

Civilian Semi auto 416A5.
Civilian Semi auto MP5A3 w 16.1’’ barrel.
Shitcan competition versions of their pistols.
Introduce threaded barrels for P30, and P2000.
Introduce match triggers for P30, and P2000.
Trijicon HD sights/10-8 sights would be standard.

Glock:

Fix reliability issues.
Discontinue all pistols not chambered in 9x19, .40S&W, .45ACP, and 10mm AUTO.
Undercut all trigger guards.
Remove finger grooves.
Trijicon/10-8 sights available from factory.
Threaded barrels available for all models.
Match barrels available for all models from factory.
Single stack fullsize/compact/subcompact 9x19mm, and .40S&W variants.
Introduce models with ambi thumb safety like the M&P.

Sorry, my bad. I was thinking Colt’s Mfg., forgot they merged back with Colt Defense. The pressures of being a CEO…

Colt

  1. Allow commercial distributors to buy factory built SBR’s.
  2. Make parts available to all distributors.
  3. Make a mid-length gas system AR15.

C4

S&W:
NO LOCKS! On anything, Revolvers? NO LOCKS! Semi-autos? NO LOCKS!

Full size revolvers get wood grips.

Fix the accuracy issues with the M&P’s. Make an audible and tactile rest for the triggers

Glock:
Single stack 9mm Glock 7 to compete with the shield. .40 S&W single stack= Glock 40

A service size version of the G36. 10+1 rounds of .45ACp and G17 length slide.

Remove finger groves, keep WML rail, undercut trigger guard

All GA made guns get smooth face triggers.

A mag shroud ala XD for the full size mags to go in the g26/27

Ruger:
Improve the Mini-14. Partner with Magpul to make quality mags for it. Put a rear sight thats worth a damn on it. Thread the barrel to accept flash hiders/brakes/comps that fit the AR. Improve the accuracy and reliablity. Bring back the wood and metal folding stocks.

Bring back the Service Six and Security Six revolvers.

Make the SR9/40 compettitive service pistols. I don’t think the design is lacking, just the overall shitty Ruger execution of it.

Sig:
Drop all of the stupid gimicky shit and get back to making quality firearms. Tell the people that want to buy all the gimicky crap to call Tauras.

KAC:
Simply up the output of awesome.
