BDS Tactical

Hi there has anyone herd of a company called BDS? I am in the market of a chest rig and was thinking of this one http://www.bdstacticalgear.com/pd_bds_tactical_battle_chest_rig.cfm
or can someone referrer me to another company?

Seems like it would be hard to go prone and be flat with the earth with those 3 mag pouches. Maybe you can find a rig where the M4 pouches hold 2 mags, most do. Take a look at Eagle, S.O. Tech or Tactical Tailor.

So something like this is more practical?

Personal opinion is that if your not running plates, pass on the chest rig. Go with a padded belt and put mags on that.

Easier to go prone, less cost, simpler, easier to pull mags out as well.

Pass on the triple mags. Also, how much Molle real-estate do you honestly need? If you want to just carry 6 mags and then pack on some extra pistol mags on front, you don’t need a super rig like that.

Personally, if it doesn’t hold plates, why make it as bulky as a plate carrier?

Grant is right in this area, but I still think a light chest rig has a purpose, at least when you need more than 3 mags.

What are you looking for? How many mags do you want to carry? What pouch style do you prefer? (velco flaps, bungees, Eagle makes kydex pouches, buttons)
Do you want shoulder padding? Will that shoulder padding interfere with aiming/shouldering your rifle? Are you 100% sure you need a hydration carrier?

I find going prone on anything more than 2 mags thick to be bothersome. I also run my chest rigs low, where my hand naturally comes closer to waist level to reload. I don’t like shoulder pads, they get in the way of shouldering my rifle.

Keep this in mind though, less bulk is always better. Don’t buy molle real-estate in places you won’t use it. Keep it small and essential to what you use.

If there is one thing that I could change with all of my purchases of cool guns and cool gear is to make it lighter. Don’t scrap what you need or like, but buy nothing you don’t.

Here is a link to my thread where I bought the CTD rig very similar to the one you bought. My mistake cost me $35, I’m just trying to make sure you don’t make a more expensive one. https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=4967&page=1

Grant can you or other members recommend some tactical belts?

If you want a belt with molle webbing on it, there really are not a lot of options (that I am aware of).

I just run this belt and pad for cheap and easy: http://www.spectergear.com/tacopsbelt.htm

Then attach various mag pouches for either AR or pistol (or both to it). Eagle makes some nice belts/gear as well so I would look at them as well.

One of the nices belts I have seen is called ICE. Maybe KevinB can give us some more info on this system.

I got one of these belts made and the craftsmanship is excellent. I have read a good many reviews of his gear on lightfighter.

I agree.
(it had to happen sometime :stuck_out_tongue: )

spaniard, what are you trying to do (and don’t say “carry mags”)?

Pat Rogers wrote a great article called “Pre-Equipment Training Issues” in SWAT magazine a couple of months ago. I and one of my shooting buddies are in the opening photo of the article. He is a contractor home from Iraq, and I’m a non-LEO civilian that likes to train and compete. The point Pat makes in the caption is that my buddy and I have very different needs, and thus very different gear. My buddy is wearing a plate carrier with (IIRC) something on the order of 12+ mags, while I’m wearing a simple Eagle chest rig with 3.

Tailor your gear to your mission. Even if you’re a non-LEO civilian like me, you still have a “mission”. Find it, and pick your gear appropriately.

I would pass on BDS Tactical all together. Most of the designs were stolen from John Willis.

John will build you what ever you need:

What I am looking for is something to carry atleast 6-9 AR mags for tactical training class, a Sturdy gun belt (designed to carry a gun) holster and 3 handgun mags.

Wow, 6-9 is alot. Who is teaching this class?

W.S.:

I will try to answer your question without sarcasm:rolleyes: . Take a look at the Tactical Tailor M.A.V. or the S.O. Tech Hellcat, both will hold 6 mags without adding additional mag pouches. Eagle industries also makes a quality chest rig.

Who is using sarcasm?

The reason I ask who is teaching the class is that of the two carbine instructors I’ve had 3 mags on the chest, one on the belt, and one in the gun has been either enough or far more than enough. From what I can tell from the AARs of Vickers, Gonzales, and Awerbuck carbine classes the same load would more than suffice.

The reason I referred to Pat’s article in SWAT is because it talks about, among other things, picking training gear based on your real-world requirements. I don’t know what spaniard’s job is, or what he’s training for, so I asked.

I am going to get a John Willis battle belt built towards the first of next year. There is a review on a http://www.ttellc.net/. Check it out if you are considering a battle bag. I met the guy that did the review at a carbine class over the summer. He is a good dude and trust he recommendations.

Agree. That is a lot of mags (unless your training with Super Dave).

You really don’t need to carry any more than 3-4 mags for a carbine class.

Here is the training facility I am considering

Never heard of them.

Contact the instructor and see if he has any recommendations. Sometimes instructors (like Pat Rogers) will also have loaner equipment for students to try out.

If you have/need/want to carry 6-9 mags then try it out. It’ll either be too heavy and you’ll look for something more stream lined or you’ll find out the best way to run it.

Personally I’ve used the Eagle/SKD Universal Chest Rig (www.skdtac.com) for several classes with excellent results. It is also the chest rig I most often see other students with. Its affordable and allows you to run with 4 to 8 AR mags.

Good luck.
