BCM Vertical Short Grip on KMR

For those with the KMR - please advise.

Should I install the nylon picatinny rail section and mount the vertical grip?..or wait for the QD keymod direct mount grip to become available?

I really don’t need the QD…I’m just concerned about what I think I read on the interwebz (which I can’t find now) stating that the nylon rail might not be the most secure attachment for a vert grip.

Any advice welcome - or a link and post # if this has been addressed.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on how hard you use a VG. You could buy an alloy rail section to attach to also. For normal use, I can’t see the polymer rail section being a problem. I’ve run bi pods mounted to those with no issue.

I went with the BCM polymer rail section with the BCM Short VFG. No issues so far 1000+ rds. Waiting on a direct key mod version for my other Keymod rail.

The new KM VG is worth waiting for. You will save weight and have a lower profile VG with the direct attach VG-S-KM versus the Picatinny VG.

The low profile is a little more comfortable as well, at least to me.

Thanks for the perspectives gents…

Going thru BCM’s website - I didn’t see any specs for weight…
What are the weights/difference??

Negligible dude, you’re worried about the weight difference between two vfg’s?

You’d actually be saving the weight of a rail segement… which is still pretty negligible. But as light as the KMR is… hey… why not save every ounce.

Just asking. I wanted to know the weights…didn’t say I was worried.

Seems like you’re worried that you think I’m worried over the weight difference between two vfg’s. I wouldn’t worry about it - if I were you.

Just wait. Might as well take full advantage of the KeyMod interface, plus QD is always nice, even if mostly unnecessary.

The VG-S-KM weighs the exact same as our previous, stubby Pic rail vert grip, 2.7oz.

Right down to the gram, in fact… 77 grams exactly for each VG, though you need to add the 21 gram rail section needed to attach the Picatinny grip to a KeyMod. So, yeah, that’s less than an ounce difference total, but that makes the KM grip 21% lighter.

For me, the toolless attachment system is a big plus, along with its lower profile to the handguard which makes for a better transition for my hand.

Thanks again for the advice - and hard grams.

Looks like the advantages of the VG-S-KM (weight, comfort, low profile, direct attachment) is worth the wait for me.

Question for those that use these shorty VFGs. Are you using them as an ad hoc AFG? I use a TD VFG that I use as a sort of an AFG, and I then have the option of also having an actual VFG, so the best of both worlds.

So what is the attraction of the shorty VFGs? Just using them more as a hand-stop/AFG?

That’s how I’m running it. With about the bottom two and a half fingers touching the grip.

That’s how I think I’d run it…with a clamp - thumb over the top rail.

I’m used to a smaller stop (IWC) - and I’m thinking I’ll be able to tuck the stock into my shoulder more positively with a short VFG. Plus…in the event the KMR were to ever get too hot, I have something to grab on to - if not the KMR.

Yeah I kind of use it as an AFG too, my ring and pinky on the grip and my middle and index on the rail. My thumb goes along the side of the top rail though, I don’t like wrapping it over.

Yeah… my thumb doesn’t go over the top since my lights are always at 10 o’clock. So the only difference being thumb location.

The VG is an excellent index for having your hand in a consistent light activation position. I can REALLY lock the gun into my shoulder… and as if the 14.5 middy with Gunfighter wasn’t easy enough to shoot fast and smooth… I think the VG is even going to add to that.

This gear is costing me a fortune in ammo…

Eagerly awaiting email notification; tool-less removal is definitely a nice touch.
