If you dont mind giving me a lesson here on exactly what the auto means Id appreciate it!

In a semi-auto, it just means increased weight in the back end of the carrier.

That sums that up. Thanks for the help!

Tex here is visual of the differences, post #5 https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=14729

Grant’s post needed no correction.

NOW…IM CONFUSED!!!
I thought Grant misspoke, too.
What gives here? Dont the F/A carriers have more weight/metal in the rear than the semi’s?

Grant meant in a semi-auto gun, the only difference in bcg is that the auto carrier has more weight in the tail.

Thanks, MegademiC…
I thought the fuckin world was ending or something crazy like that…WHEW!

oooh I see :o Funny how things can be interpreted differently.

Just to add a bit of history…

The whole semi-auto carrier came about due to an effort to appease the public/news media/law makers by being able to say it was just that much harder to convert an AR to full auto because the bolt was incompatible.

Late 80s early 90s there was a lot “to do” made about how “easy” it was to convert a semi auto to full auto. At this point in time, registered drop in auto sears were still fairly available for ARs, and full auto parts for may types of rifles were extremely easy to get a hold of and not any more expensive than semi-auto parts. There are marketed as replacement parts for those with legal NFA firearms. I still remember the Shotgun News ads, basically cash and carry and it was up to you to stay legal.

It was also during this time period that Colt stopping it’s AR production to make changes their AR design to make it even harder to convert an AR to full auto in order to try and take some heat of them self. Which resulted in Bushmaster being a more desirable rifle if you wanted something close to milspec and of decent quality (competition being Olympic, Eagle Arms, and who knows from where surplus parts in shotgun news). The quality of Colt was still superior, but some of the changes really irked people and made the “commercial” Colts incompatible with “milspec” parts.

The fallout of those times still “haunts” us to this day.

Thank God Colt isn’t being run by the same people today, and we no longer have to choose between BM, Oly, Eagle, or surplus parts from who knows where in shotgun news if you want an AR and you couldn’t live with the changes made to Colts at that time.

For the Win!
