BCM 14.5 Enhanced Medium Weight Fluted?

Anybody have any first hand experience with these? I’ve decides I need another BCM upper and can’t decide between the EMWF and the ELW? I found tons of resources on the ELW, but I’m not seeing much on the EMWF.

I used a 14.5 emw for a build last year. I had a local guy cut it down to 13.7 and pin a BE meyers 249 on it. Overall I was very happy with it. I put a 2.5-10 PST on it and it shot very well, although I never did any serious group shooting with it. Depending on the purpose of the gun, it could be a great option. I personally would stick with the ELW for a ‘carbine’ as my 11.5 elw-f barrel is still plenty accurate.

I’ve been wondering why they don’t offer more uppers with these, much less a BFH version.

I need accuracy, and that means I need a barrel that won’t open up to much on me when things get toasty. My 14.5 gov profile guns get stupid hot during drills that require longer strings of fire, especially during the summer when it’s 100°. I understand the ELW will cool faster, but the EMWF won’t heat up nearly as fast.

Another factor for me is weight. The ELW is light and would definitely be easier to carry. Having said that I’m currently used to carrying standard gov profile guns around. I assume EMWF more balanced than a standard gov profile, making the weight easier to hold up for longer?

Right?! It seems like it would be a solid set up for a heavy use/fight worthy gun.

From everything I’ve read and seen the gov profile is completely obsolete compared to the ELW and EMWF profiles. I wonder why BCM doesn’t only offer their enhanced barrels with their rifles/uppers.

A friend of mine has an EMW upper, I’ll ask if he has had a chance to test for accuracy with it yet. For what it’s worth, I email BCM a few months back about the possibility of them making this barrel in a 16" version and they said they didn’t plan on it, which is too bad because the EMW would be a great 16" barrel. For some reason this barrel doesn’t seem to get much attention…

I’ve got one matched with a Leopold patrol 1-4ish optic. I haven’t run it through the whole testing gauntlet yet. the weight increase is noticeable and I haven’t been able to shoot it at distance or run it through a class. I purchased it as a general purpose rifle, short enough for in the house or vehicle and I figure it will be stiff/accurate enough for intermediate range, but I haven’t had the opportunity to really test it past 25-50 yards. It does group better than my ELW during zeroing FWIW. But, for close in shooting I enjoy shooting my RDS equipped ELW with KMR rail better.

Sounds like you set up your rifles similar to the way I do. I run all 1-4x and 14.5 barrels. I like a general purpose rifle thats short enough to maneuver quickly with enough magnification to dominate 300 yards and in.

You said you notice a weight increase over the ELW, does it feel pretty substantial? How does the EMWF handle when compared to a standard gov profile? Do you notice a difference in balance?

Thanks for your feedback

Best way to express the difference between the ELW and EMW is like when I went from an M4 to an M4A1. It’s noticeably heavier barrel but completely workable and you can get used to it. I’d have to use it in some timed drills to really quantify a difference. Next time I’m back in the states I’ll try and quantify it better.

I have one of the 14.5 EMW uppers and I like it. The barrel weighs the same as an M4A1 Government Profile 1lb, 10oz, which doesn’t weigh much at all. I’ve shot the rifle primarily with a 1-4 Vortex PST. However, recently I shot a 10 shot group at 100 yards with it using iron sights and IMI M855. I was pleasantly surprised and I’m not a great shooter.

The initial 5 shot group was fired before I adjusted, and that is where the thumbtacks are. I’m pleased with the 10 shot group from the bench with iron sights(MBUS Pro) Target is a CSAT target, small gray square is 1" - This is with the BCM PNT Trigger.

Solid shooting. Thanks for the info. I’m really leaning towards the EMWF at this point.

OP, I’ve been eyeing one of these barrel as well. If hammer-forging is of an interest to you, Ballistic Advantage is offering a 14.5” middy in their Hanson profile for a limited time. I was interested enough in this profile to order a 12.5” in stainless.

I impulse bought one of these. OP, if this barrel interest you PM me.

FYI - I emailed and asked about the BFH version, BCM said they have no plans to make that version, unfortunately.

Thanks for the offer, but I’m looking for a complete upper. Not quite confident enough to install a barrel on my own yet.

That definitely sucks. Makes zero sense to me.

I noticed that there is a EMWF upper for sale in the Equipment Exchange… Sucks that I don’t have enough posts yet on this forum to be able to post that I’m interested in it.

No one can post replies in the EE. If you are interested in something PM or email the thread starter.

Dropped him a couple visitor messages on his page over the last couple weeks without getting a response, although he keeps bumping his add. I’m not seeing any other way to contact him?

If you click on his user name a menu will drop down that should allow you to send him a PM.

Figured it out. Didn’t show up in the cellular page, had to open it up in the desktop version for it so show up. Not sure why. Anyway, I have a PM sent. Thanks for your help!
