BCM 11.5" w/ LWRC UCIW stock setup?

Is anyone running this unsuppressed?

I’m looking at putting this setup together, but have heard that the LWRC UCIW buffer weighs approximately the same as a standard carbine buffer (~3.1oz). I’ve heard that an H or H2 is recommended for an 11.5" setup. Is this a concern?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

PS: forgot to add, I generally run affordable Wolf/WPA 55grn or 62grn.

I too am curious about this as I have been considering this stock for my BCM 11.5 SBR…

I replaced the factory 4-position stock on my old Colt 6933 with the ultra-compact IW stock from LWRCI. Function is 100% and it seems to balance out the DD 10.3" barrel I installed on it. I was looking for the smallest “practical” package in a conventional 5.56mm AR-15 SBR. It’s OAL is now 1" shorter. Included are a flat wire recoil spring and a shortened “H2” buffer. Brass ejects to the same 2 o’clock over gassed position as always. I’m satisfied and believe LWRCI did a good job designing the stock. If you have an account at Brownells you can return it for any reason should you decide you want return the lower back to its original configuration.

Well that’s where it gets confusing. The only weights I can find for the UC2 buffer range from 3.0-3.3. Here’s a picture of one weighing 3.1 - http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?8919-Superlite-Grendel-Build-(spend-my-money!)/page4

But if you’re not having any problems that’s a good sign. What kind of ammo do you generally shoot with?

28-days,

That UC2 buffer is what came with my UCIW stock too.

I mainly shoot Federal XM193 in the plain brown 20 per box cartons. With the 10.3" DD barrel so over gassed the little SBR will feed, fire & eject anything from Tulammo, Wolf, to all out full power combat loads. I have an almost new Colt 14.5" M4 barrel that I’m likely going to ship to ADCO to be cut to 10.3" with a .073" gas port to reduce the high gas impulse and stop beating the rifle up. For what it’s worth the rifle is dead reliable (with either buttstock). I’d have to say after firing the SBR 500-600 rounds with this new stock, I cannot tell any difference in the way the rifle shoots with the UCIW stock. I’d say they got it right.

Seems to me one good reason to go with this UCIW stock & R/E is to create the smallest possible package while still using the carbine length gas system. I have another Colt SBR with an 11.5" barrel that will always wear the factory fiberlite stock with a standard length R/E. …just looks correct.

Took a pic this morning so you get an idea of what it looks like.

I would be curious to examine the spent brass from M193 with the DD barrel UCIW system.

Shouldn’t be a problem. I need to zero a 16" barreled AR that was just crowned with a N/F NXS 1-4x24mm within the next few days. I’ll bring the 10.3" DD barreled Colt and secure some fired cases then post pic’s here unless that might be seen as highjacking this thread. To help 28-days I can try and locate my spare QD mount for my AAC suppressor.

I appreciate the info and the picture!

From what I understand, the BCM gas ports are cut pretty inline with spec. Not too big but not too small. I think I’m going to take a chance on it and see where it gets me. My Form 1 should come back in a month or so (fingers crossed).

Nice setups! It makes sense that the DD 10.3" has no issues, it is quite a generous gas port.

Thanks openbolt!

PS: I’m not looking at adding a suppressor anytime soon. They literally just became legal in MN two weeks ago

I have run this setup on the following

DD 10.3 with DD Bolt and Carrier (mk 18)

DD 10.3 with BCM Bolt and Carrier (different rifle built upper)

Noveske 14.5 with Young N/M and BCM Carrier

No issues

I have also run the setup with the following cans for the above rifles

AAC SDN-6
Surefire SOCOM 5.56

Both had issues with failure of bolt to lock back on last round. Switched to heavier buffer and issue was fixed but I also run Vltor A5s with those setups so the issue is moot.

I have run the UCIW out of a 9" 300 BLK with BCM Bolt and Carrier shooting subs and with a can. No issues what so ever.

YMMV. Hope this helps

Thanks BOOST!

I’m not quite clear though. It sounds like you were using the UCIW setup with the non-can setups, but then switched to the A5 setup? Did the UCIW setup work with either can outside of the 9" setup?

Thanks!

The UCIW works with a can but the bolt speed is too fast and would not lock back about half the time on an empty mag. Mags used were standard USGI green follower, USGI tan follower, PMAGs, and Lancers.

Perfect, this is great to know. Thank you!

BTW as i switched to a standard length receiver extension and also an A5 it worked 100% can and no can. Currently the two 10.3s wear a standard length and A5 length receiver extension.

Finally found time to fire some LC 14 M193 through the UCIW stock assembly. Here’s the best picture of that ammo after being fired out of my DD 10.3" barreled SBR equipped with the UC LWRC setup. I have to admit after looking at the fired cases it indicates that the brass has been shall we say…banged around pretty hard. Bottom piece of brass looks as if the rim started to give way as it looks bent where the Colt bolt/extractor tried to pull it out of the chamber possibly before the pressure had dropped to a safe level? Just an educated guess. Hope this helps.

During this outing I fired just short of 300 rounds and experienced no drama, no issues, no malfunctions. Seems this is pretty potent ammo when it’s fired through the overgassed DD 10.3" barrel.

If you can provide better pictures, I would be curious to see the extractor marks on the brass.

Did you click on the thumbnail pic? That’s a pretty hi-res pic there. Or are you asking for a different angle?

I should have been more specific, clear pictures from different angles to see how much the brass has distorted around the extractor claw.

28 Days,

Did you decide to pull the trigger on this? If so, how do you like the set up on the 11.5"?

I wonder if a LMT enhanced carrier would work well with this upper and lower combo to help slow down BCG speed.

You can always run the ultra compact stock on a standard receiver extension with H buffer if you don’t like the set up it comes with. It’s such a short system that few in anyone will use it with the stock fully collapsed
