Barrel Markings

I purchased a DD CHF 16" mid-length 1/7 twist light contour through MidwayUSA. It arrived today to my excitement However, the barrel markings have me concerned:

“091000003”
“DD F MP 5.56 NATO 1/9”

I just emailed DD customer service…but its got me worried and I dont want to wait for a reply tomorrow haha. Any one know if i got shipped the wrong barrel by mistake?

I found this: https://danieldefense.com/barrel-id

Their current catalog does not include 1/9 lightweight or 1/9 mid-length barrels. i suppose that doesnt mean they didnt used to make them. All other markings show correct (assuming F=cold hammer forged, even though their new barrels are stamped “HF”).

Is it possible this is some sort of forgery barrel? Stamped as a DD to be worth more? Is it possible it got stamped incorrectly as 1/9?

Thanks for the help!

Will

Sounds like you got the wrong one or old stock- is it a lightweight or a govt’ profile- I used the search and a few mistakes like your experiencing have been made in the past by other vendors. Contact midway they will make it right…

it is lightweight. Like i said, assuming “F” = cold hammer forged, it is what i ordered except for the barrel twist.

im pretty sure you got the wrong barrel…BUT DONT WORRY…

I ordered a DD CHF 16" 1/7 M4 profile from Midway about 9 months ago and when i received it i noticed that it didn’t have a “Born On Date” and the markings were suspect. I did alot of research and noticed that the markings were the same as the DD barrels that were NOT CHF because they were manufactured before DD got their forging machines. The exact barrel that i received was selling on Midway for $160 and I paid $250 for it thinking it was CHF. The tubular box it came in was in fact marked CHF but i was still suspicious.

Anyway, I promptly contacted DD, not Midway, and told them that i bought a barrel that I suspect isn’t CHF. Larry Stanley of DD told me to send it to them and they would bore-scope it. So, thats what i did and it turned out i was right and it was an older non CHF barrel.

He said it was a labeling error by them and not Midway. Regardless, it was phenomenal customer service and they actually shipped my CHF barrel out the same day they received my mislabeled barrel. I received my barrel in 4-5 days including shipping both ways.

The barrel i received was marked correctly and i’m totally satisfied although i did wonder why my new barrel was so old considering their turnover. It was made in August of 09’.

Thanks for the response! I’m a little bummed because the barrel i ordered is not in stock anywhere (and apparently its not in stock at midway either since they shipped me the wrong barrel). Was really looking forward to getting this upper put together. Hopefully I can come away as satisfied with the CS as you.

Before i ordered they were in stock and i put off ordering to check the budget. When i went to order they were out with a instock date of 22 Apr. On 22 Apr the date was 5 May, then later 11 May…then suddenly in stock again…

Seems a little shady on midways part. Did they just buy a batch of older barrels and then try passing them off as newer ones hoping no one actually checks the markings? Or was this barrel sent to midway by DD by mistake, among other barrels that were what i wanted, and i just got unlucky?

I wish i could give you an answer but i just don’t know. I would say that if the tube that the barrel came in is marked as the barrel you wanted/ordered its DD’s fault but if the markings on the tube match the barrel inside its Midways fault.

ETA: either way i would contact DD for a replacement since there will be a much better chance of the barrel you want being in stock. But, if dd’s out of them and you confirm by calling Midway that the correct barrel is in stock deal with them. Either company should take care of it.

Return the barrel to Midway and order this.

I just picked up a DD 16’ LW Mid-Lenght barrel today from my local gun shop and it was stamped “DD F MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 06/10” And the model number we DD-9089 and after looking on DD website it says that DD-9089 is a CHF barrel. An the “F” is an indication of that. Here is the link to the one that I got.

yes. That is what the “F” means. Mine has an “F” also and it is CHF.

Use a cleaning rod & patch to verify the twist. If it takes about 7 inches for the cleaning rod to make on complete turn as it’s pushed through- no worries, mate.

If it takes 9 inches, well, there you go

kywaterfowler - yeah, thats the one i thought i was ordering and Midway thought they were shipping.

I’m debating actually just sticking with 1/9. Forums can have alot of information, but that can be conflicting. From what i’ve gleaned, 1/9 is good for 55gr-69gr. Most of my shooting will be 55gr (georgia arms canned heat for example) for target and matches. I’m moving this summer and planning on getting into some hunting, starting off with this rifle. From what i understand the ammo of choice for that is in the 62-69gr range, still handled well by 1/9 twist.

That and if you want to go down into the lighter weight bullets ie 40-53 grs V-Max for groundhogs it will serve you better in that direction- it is still a super barrel- just not a mil-spec twist.

If you’re leaning toward keeping it I’d still contact Midway. At the very least they should work with you, maybe lower the price since it’s not what you ordered. I suppose the 091000003 on your barrel indicates a “Born On Date” of 10/09 (but it’s done differently than below where the date is April 2010).

My 16" LW CHF Daniel Defense barrel purchased in December is marked: DD F MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 04/10

I actually prefer 1/9. My opinions starting to shift bc I just started handloading though. My 1/9 shot 75gr. Hornady very well @100 yards. I didn’t have a chance to try it past that yet.
