Barrel for 3-Gun Rifle

I’m planning on building up a new 3-Gun rifle this year. Here’s what I need:

  • 17-18" O.A.L.
  • Rifle-length gas system.
  • -A2 profile or close to it. Lighter is better.
  • 1.5 MOA accurate out to 500 yards, assuming match-grade ammo. 1 MOA would be better.
  • Lifespan of at least 10,000 rounds given appropriate care. That’s about two years worth of training and matches, I really wouldn’t want to replace the barrel any sooner than that.

So, what should I be looking at?

no guaranty you’ll get 10,000 rounds through any match barrel, but shilen, kreiger, douglass, WOA all have good reputations in the competitive world. for possibly longer service before accuracy degradation, but slightly less initial accuracy, Noveske, Larue, BCM, centurion arms all make very accurate combat-ready stainless barrels.

you’ll definately get 1.5 MOA, and should get MOA or significantly better, with any of these barrels.

BCM makes a 18’'Barrel rifle length gas system. 410ss harder than 416 ss you should get more barrel life out of it.

It is an SPR profile you could send it to ADCO and have it turned down a little to save you some weight.

From what I hear, all the cool kids are shooting BCM barrels! :wink:

Noveske. Depending on contour you may want, you can then go to the super premium barrel mfg’s like Krieger.

The problem, is that most match-type AR barrels are DMR-profile or even heavier. That’s way more weight than I like. So, another related question: has anyone really wrung out a turned-down barrel at long range, and what kind of accuracy results did they get?

If it’ll still shoot around an MOA at 4-500 yards, a spun-down BCM barrel would fit the bill quite nicely.

That’s what I’m using this year, but mines a 16" midlength turned down to .650" behind the gas block. It shoots under half MOA at 100yds using 75gr Prvi after the barrel thinning.

Is there a general preference for stainless over hammer forged?
