Backward mounted scope - relieved of duty

Guy paid the price

“The commander of a Navy destroyer that’s helping protect the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Middle East has been relieved of duty about four months after he was seen in a photo firing a rifle with a scope mounted backward.”

I would say knowingly letting the Boss show his a$$ and not stopping him is a sign no one likes that MF’er.

I forgot about this buffoonery. Oddly enough he’s take a Staff position at ARFtard.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. Makes you wonder if it was essentially a way of raising a red flag on his command, and it drew enough attention to get an investigation launched.

Or he was canned for political reasons. There have been a lot of high-level firings recently.

Okay, playing Devil’s advocate here: He was prolly handed the rifle for a photo op. Does it really make sense to relieve him of command of a ship because of that? He clearly doesn’t know how to shoot a rifle, but when was the last time it was part of his job description?

It is extremely unlikely that that photo had much to do with the root cause of his firing. Probably more of a symptom, as others said.

On the other hand, there’s a lot of other gadgets he can come across where an inability to admit ignorance could have very deleterious effects.

I would go further and suggest he was set up.

Btw, “due to a loss of confidence” is just a catchphrase when anyone in DoD command ranks gets shitcanned publicly. It can mean a lot of things. It’s been a popular phrase lately.

I would bet you’re right.
Generally your Troops expect you to “have your poop in one scoop”.
If you’re working with, training with and know your Troops, you can have mutual respect.
But if for a minute they think you’re a detriment rather than an asset to them,…well,

Suddenly the Carbine they handed you has the scope on Backwards.

Agreed. Firing him over that pic is just silly. A lot of laughter in the O-Club is honestly a better punishment. Start calling him “Top Gun” or something like that.

But I would wager a day’s liberty that he irritated a Chief or Senior Chief on his ship, and that picture is a direct result. Chief’s run the Navy, and it’s something one should not forget.
