Can i use baby oil to lube up my gun after i clean it?
Or something else around the house?
Im broke right now so cant run to walmart and get gun lube. Can i just use something around the house for my AR 15?
I’d steal oil from the dipstick in my car before using baby oil.
There are plenty of alternate products you can use, but baby oil is about the last I’d consider. It is very thin and not really designed as a lubricant to begin with.
Any lube for your car will be fine. Motor oil, ATF, wheel bearing grease, etc.

You really should not…if you want your gun to run. Baby oil is basically just mineral oil and will react badly to temperature extremes (basically evaporating and leaving residue when hot and get thick and sluggish when cold). This is the reason that special lubricants were invented! You don’t have to use the mega high speed stuff…a plain bottle of Break-Free CLP will work. I use Tuf Oil (www.tufoil.com) and it works great. If I had no choice, I would use an automotive type oil (as I am) over a “household” lube as they are formulated for higher temp and stress application.

If not, it’s likely no good as a lubricant and certainly not heat resistant enough for an AR. Don’t try margarine, butter, petroleum jelly, KY or peanut oil, either.
If you must go cheap with lubricant, I would encourage you to consider some synthetic motor oil, like Mobile 1 in just about any weight. It’s maybe $4 for a quart, and has more lubricity and heat resistance than baby oil.
As a general rule, many automotive products translate reasonably well to firearms. Isopropyl alcohol is a decent degreaser and cleaner, too. If that’s all you got, it will work in a pinch.

Questions are always welcomed, but many questions have been asked countless times, and simple search for “Lubricant” would have yielded good results.

We use mineral oil to break in airplane engines. No shit. Although, we buy it from avaition suppliers, not down at the drugstore…
It’d probably work for lubing an AR temporarily, but I’d use engine oil instead. In fact, it’s what I use exclusivly for gun oil these days. Picked me up a couple of clear squeeze condiment bottles at Walmart and a quart of synthetic motor oil…
just make sure you use synthetic motor oil, OP… conventional will work, but it smokes, stinks bad, and burns off fairly quick.

The old recip engines used mineral oil during break-in. During WWI they used Castor oil.
