Edited to add this pic: Magpul and TPD R&D are working on developing a clear PMAG version, these are just clear test articles, the final product will be black smoke and green tinted.

Added 5/06/07 - In the photo you will see two barrels one the TPD way and one the way it can be installed and is typically installed.

The foreground gas block and barrel is the way TPD does it.

Material cell structure is well maintained, and color.

The background barrel is installed in a way that is less desirable per TPD’s humble opinion.

Added 5/06/07 “Here is a picture of our TPD-PMAG. Magpul manufactures these for us. It is their design their mold we simply brought to them a material we hoped would work in their mold.”

“Things look good so far, but we have more testing to do. They will come in a smoke tint as well. VERY good price point I might add.” - stated by Kent of TPDUSA.com.

Added 5/19/07 - AXR FDE (Flat Dark Earth color) stock

The AXR rifle is different from the other American made AUG style rifle which is the STG-556 by M.S.A.R., the AXR uses the Steyr AUG M16 NATO conversion stocks which uses M16 and AR-15 magazines, it will not take the standard Steyr AUG or the STG-556 magazines.

The AXR rifles will initially use the original Steyr stock conversions but will be following it up with US made stocks with a more improved and stronger materials.

TPD is currently developing clear magazines with Magpul Industries which is the same as the PMAG but will be clear smoke and clear green tint colors.

The estimated selling price will be under $2K and will include a hard case, it will be available in more than three colors which I will update this info at a later date when it get finalized.

Tactical Product Design’s website is currently under construction but will be on-line in a very short time from now, I’ll post it here when available.

The basic AXR model will be the Liberty series which will not include sights, the user may accessorize as the user sees fit.

It will also be available with other upgraded model series which will include sights and other accessories, I’ll update this thread for more info.

Adjustable gas system

Original forward assist configuration

Last round hold open

Secondary magazine release in optimal position for quick magazine changes

Receiver fully machined on cutting edge CNC equipment
Tolerances held to above industry standard, 356 T6 series aluminum

OEM cleaning kits

Fully supported spare parts system and training systems available for the AXR™

You will not find a secondary bolt release on the AXR. This feature was investigated and it was decided to leave it off the AXR™. This feature was not originally available on the AUG™, and we felt that a more faithful rendition of the rifle was the right choice.

The AXR can release the bolt as the original; a quick draw of the non-reciprocating charge handle will release the bolt, as originally designed and integrated.

No other existing firearms parts have been integrated into or onto the AXR™, the design was and still is sound.

What has changed on the AXR™ are the materials used to manufacture the rifle. This is a thirty year old design, yet today it is still unmatched and unrivalled in performance, reliability, and durability.

What T.P.D. has done is simple yet effective:

Crucial springs are now made from Inconel™ a super alloy, rather than music wire or other low grade materials.

Superior finishes are used to coat the metal parts of the AXR™. Both Teflon filled and ceramic filled finishes are used given the performance demand of the part.

The most significant change to the original will be the use of the NATO standard magazines rather than a proprietary magazine configuration. This will give the user both an ample supply of existing magazines and compatibility with other users in the field.

We at Tactical Product Design have taken every step to insure that this faithful recreation will be every bit as durable, reliable, field able, and accurate as the original. In fact we are convinced that we have manufactured a product that in many ways is superior to the original.

Added gas block and clear PMAG experimental mags photos 5/06/07
Added AXR FDE stock photo 5/19/07

Great info! Looks very promising.

I’m digging the use of M16 mags, and the price looks good too.

Yes, take a look at the new clear PMAGs that Magpul and TPD are working on, I just added a new pic on my original post.

Mags are great right now for ARs and the AUG versions that could use them, I’m currently using standard USGI alum mags, C Products stainless and HK mags on my Steyr A1 with Steyr NATO conversion stock.

I’m still looking around for the new Magpul PMAGs but most sellers are out of stock now, I’ll have to wait for the next shipment from the factory.

Another good thing about these new US made AUG style rifles are that they will also sell new spare parts for the original AUG and I’m going to get a new receiver with picatinny rails on them so I could use different type optics and add on a weaponlight.

I wonder how many parts will interchange with factory AUG parts…and…parts availability in general is something of a concern if there’s a lot of proprietary stuff inside the gun.

Looks VERY nice…just wouldn’t want to be stuck with an $1800 paper weight if something tanks on it and the uncertainty of future parts availability.

Not saying that will happen for sure, but stranger things have happened.

Very impressive.

I’m planning on buying one.

This AXR by TPD are all inerchangeable parts with the Steyr AUG and it’s Steyr M16-NATO conversion stock like what I currently have on my Steyr AUG A1 model.

The other US made STG556 by M.S.A.R. that uses their own proprietary AUG type magazines are not all interchangeable parts, their mags won’t fit the original AUG, they have a bolt forward assist like the M16 but on the left side of the stock and a bolt hold/ release which the original AUG and the AXR don’t have.

Worried about the future parts, nobody can’t really tell, even AR parts and rifles could be banned sometime in the future.

The best thing is to get them now with spare parts while we still can.

Ref: The other US made AUG “STG556 (AUG-style) made in US” thread link

I always “wanted” to like the STG in spite of itself. But alas, the cost, trigger, ergos, and concept of ignition taking place under my cheek steered me clear. As always, I welcome another successful introduction to the industry, but…

Added detailed info from TPD on my first post.

I must say that there doesn’t look bad at all.

TPD USA’s website is up and running.

http://www.tpdusa.com/index.php

Thanks for posting that we are up and running! We still have alot of work to do on the site, but it is a pretty good start. Feel free to add any comments of how we can do better on the site.

We have a rail system that is yet to be disclosed until we can get it legally protected. I think you will like it.

Still good for a late June debut of the rifle an look for us in SWAT mag in a few months. Thanks for the boards and good shooting.

Kent, thanks for coming over to give us updates.

Anyway to get on a mailing list?

I wish I could afford all these wonderful toys…

That looks like a keeper…

Added gas block and clear PMAG photos to my first post.

I’ve never understood the geekiness towards clear mags but damn do they look beautiful in that AUG clone. I guess the most exciting thing is that this AUG takes M16 mags AND there are M16 mags (PMags) that will look right in the gun!

Anyone try Pmags in an FS2000? I think the stamped metal mags don’t look quite right in the polymer guns…

Yes you can go to our new web site at TPDUSA.com and click the on the “sign up” button and add your name. I have a couple more picks from recent shoot, I’ll see if I can post them.

Here are a few of the franken mount and a won over AR guy!

Looks like the rifle is going to turn out great!

Yes, we are very excited by all the testing and quality parts that make up the AXR.

Just had a meeting with a company to license some of their baffles and add to our barrel over can design.

This is going to really blow the lid of cans, no joke! The can works in a totally counter intuitive fashion. Does not use back pressure to regulate sound attenuation. Really have no other info at this time, we are at the early stages of this, but the cans are done we just need to adapt it to a barrel over configuration to keep the length down. Comes in at 13 ounces or a tad more.

So you are having someone adapt their can to this barrel or you are making sure your barrels will accept the cans at a later date when the standard cans do become available? Please tell me it’s not AAC and I will consider buying one.

This would look nice with the AAC sprocketed FH but also equally nice with an Ops brake. I don’t know of an AAC reflex suppressor anyway…

Keep up the good work and I pray that this doesn’t cause the ATF to start coming down hard on new types of ingenuity!!

Is this going to be lefty-friendly like the original?
