This is an interesting detailed 23 page autopsy report of “B.I.G”.

One thing I noticed is the guy is 6’2" 395 lbs and the bullet first went through the Suburban vehicle door and then penetrated at the top of his right hip continuing upwards through his vital organs including colon, liver, diaphragm, heart, and lung before exiting his shoulder.

Anybody know the details of the firearm and ammo used? I was thinking 9mm prior, but wow that is impressive penetration, maybe 7.62x39? Does anybody know what or the manufacturer of a FMJ bullet marked “LS” at the base?

they(coroner) marked the Bullet “LS” for identification for the report /Case.
Medium caliber would probably be a 30 caliber which would be a Ak-47 or SKS or M1 Carbine But going through a Door and then going through him I would guess a 7.62x39 FMJ

EDIT I found this but if it was AP round the Copper Jacket would not be Intact :The FBI files identify the type of bullets used as Gecko 9mm, a rare metal-piercing munition manufactured in Germany and available in the U.S. through just two distributors, one in California and one in New Jersey.

That will again raise the name of David Mack, a corrupt former LA police officer who served 14 years in jail for a $722,000 armed bank robbery in LA in 1997.

Geco 9mm was imported quite a bit years ago, none of it was AP ammo.

A good hot 9mm FMJ round would be capable of that type of penetration.

I see now the coroner marked the bullet for identification.

I remember the Geco 9mm ammo and might even still have some. It is hot, not IMI Uzi hot, but similar to Lawman probably.

there was a hirtenberger truncated round made for hard targets. +p++:D

From the police reports the shooter was very likely David Mack using a Beretta like his LAPD issued 92. That 5" barrel and the Geco ammo would put that bullet around 1350fps from the muzzle. Plenty of penetration capability using that thick jacket FMJ.

Exactly.

Even the Geco .32acp back then was rather hot IIRC. I know I tested some from a Walther PP and it would punch a GI steel pot and liner from 10 yards.

Probably an old GECO BAT round. For some reason they would penetrate military Kevlar despite being marketed like the Saftey Slugs.

Likely not. Those had rather shallow penetration in tissue due to a light bullet and some expansion of the nose.

I used to shoot a lot of Geco 9mm back then, it was my fav practice ammo. Accurate, easy to find, and cheap. I was told it had a small steel rod length-wise through it, and considering how often it sparked when it skipped off concrete in in-door ranges I’m inclined to believe it.

No exactly, had a copper plated heavy steel jacket. That’s why it sparked.
