Australian Outback Ammunition has just announced that they will be selling .223 and .308 ammunition here in the U.S.A starting this month. They have developed a few different loadings, but their big claim is a feature they call BTI, or Ballistic Temperature Independence. The company claims that their ammo maintains a more consistent velocity over a wide range of ambient temperatures.
Excellent news!
No surprise to the claim. A lot of Hodgdon “extreme” series powders are made in Australia by ADI, like Varget. A guy can dump Varget in .223 and .308 with the same temperature insensitivity. Same temperature insensitivity as Hodgdon’s Extreme lineup including H4198, H322, Benchmark, H4895, H4350, H4831, H4831SC, H1000, Retumbo, and H50BMG.
Is this something that would be sold in bulk at a competitive price- like training, plinking, put away ammo? Or is it high end match grade stuff?
Seems like the SMK ammo is for medium/long range target shooting. The Gameking and Scirroco bullets are for hunting medium game and the Blitzking is a varming hunting bullet. Looks like SMKs for target and the rest for hunting. No plinkers like 55/62gr or 147/150gr, respectively. Looks like it’s mostly geared toward hunting.
The link shows 69gr SMK and 55gr Blitzking in .223
150gr Swift Sirocco, 165gr Gameking, 168gr SMK in .308
So basically not gonna do anything to help the current ammo situation
Looks like this DKG Trading outfit is going to be the importer. Here’s some info from them.

And they have a website up.
ADI is listed at the bottom of the page as the Maker.

Too bad there isnt a cheap 55gr offering.
Itll be over $1/rd most likely
Read that bottom of the webpage. Notice that it’s a trade name of ADI aka Australian Defense Industries? Same powder manufacturer of Hodgdon’s Extreme powders.
ADI is also the company that produces 8208xbr for IMR.
Definitely a win-win here.
Guns are basically illegal in Australia, so they have no one to sell ammo to there. Ammo is hard to get in the US, so they can just ship all of their stuff here and sell it for 2-3 times what they would Down Under.
Guns are far from illegal in Australia. They are not allowed to own semi automatic firearms, but everything else is fair game.
There laws are not what ours are, but they are better than most.
Outstanding news, I hope they give us some NATO offerings. ![]()
Um … they are going after bolt action rifles down under …

Perhaps an Aussie can chime in?
Going after does not mean illegal. I dated a female that had dual citizenship. When she moved back to Australia i went for 45 days. I have been back since. I know that semi autos are no go, but everything else is ok. They have a large gun culture, and great hunting. I used a bolt gun owned by her father the last time i went back. While i do not know all the is and outs i know that the semi auto was the only thing they could not have.
They do not even have pending legislation yet. Saying guns are illegal in Australia in this case would be as inaccurate as saying guns are banned in the US. We have people doing the same thing talking about banning a type of firearms. So guns are illegal in the US as well by your reasoning.
The problem with Austrailian ammo is you have to run it in a barrel with a left hand twist.
