Had an interesting day at the range yesterday. I’m pleased with my AUG but was surprised about its inability to shoot American Eagle Black Box xm193 well (about 5 moa). It shoots centurion into a ragged hole, but XM193 looks like a shot gun pattern. My goal is two range trips. One to get ballstic info, and one to get accuracy info, and then decide what ammo to buy. I also wanted to see what the 20 inch barrel actually gives me over the 16.
I was using a Steyr Aug A3 with a T1 and a 16 inch barrel (that came with the gun) and a 20 inch USR barrel. 60 degrees, intermittent showers - your basic Seattle day. Here are some interesting call outs:
• American Eagle “tactical” XM193 sucks. IT is extremely underpowered. I reset the chrono frequently and split the testing, intermixing a known good round of IMI in the magazine. I’m confident that there is a problem with this specific lot of ammo.
• The South African was among the hottest with the 16 inch barrel but was slower with the 20 inch barrel.
• Wolf is underpowered and slower out of the 20 inch.
• Winchester Q3131a was hottest all the way around.
• IMI M855 is as hot as the 55 grain stuff most offer.
• Priv Partisan ammo is consistent.
I shot all the rounds over the chrono with a T1 at a man size steal target at 200 yards. All the ammo, except the underpowered XM193 was minute of man accurate. I’ll do the accuracy testing later this month. Here are the numbers:
