NFA Recall…

To all retail customers:

On January 2010 American Tactical Imports Inc received official notification from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives that the original barrel shroud (aka: fake suppressor) supplied with your GSG 5 SD model must be replaced. It has been determined that this shroud is regulated under the National Firearms Act. American Tactical will provide a replacement shroud at no charge for each GSG 5 SD model sold or currently in inventory.

Consumers in possession of a GSG 5 SD model with the original shroud in place on the firearm are now in violation of the NFA. To avoid continued violation of the NFA, ATI asks that all persons in possession obtain a replacement shroud as soon as possible. We anticipate arrival of the new shrouds to begin by the middle of February 2010.

IMPORTANT: THE ORIGINAL SD MODEL SHROUD MUST BE RETURNED ACOMPANIED BY THE FIREARM SERIAL NUMBER BEFORE A REPLACEMENT SHROUD IS ISSUED. THE DIAMETER OF THE SD SHROUD IS 1-9/16”. DO NOT RETURN THE SMALLER CARBINE SHROUD.

WHAT TO DO:
If possible return your old shroud to the dealer where purchased and show him this notice. The shroud will be returned to ATI along with a list of serial numbers from the guns that the shrouds were removed. ATI will send replacements to the dealer for pick up at your convenience; ATI will be sending replacements as fast as logistics allow. If your dealer is out of business or difficult to reach, or you purchased your gun used, from a consumer, return the shroud directly by US mail or UPS to American Tactical Imports Inc. 100 Airpark Drive Rochester, NY 14624.

What is it about the as issued shroud that makes it an evil NFA no no? This is an useless pain in the ass. There is no way all of the weapons will be refitted with the new shroud. I would hate to see someone charged criminally because they were unaware of a recall

Good thing I decided to go with the 5PK model, SBR it and add a “real” suppressor, that way I don’t have to put up with that bull$hit.

Anyone know specifically what is wrong with the original? Just not long enough?

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday actually. We are pretty sure it is because the original shroud can be turned into an actual suppressor so easily. Port the barrel, drop a couple baffles into the tube and you have an easily screwed on suppressor for about 15 buck.

THANK YOU for the heads up! I was going to take this thing to the range next Saturday, and the last thing any of us GSG-5 owners needs is any trouble with the law.

I posted some additional questions on TOS since ATI posted this note. However, as is the norm–the signal to noise ration on TOS is ridiculous. I’m concerned with the status of the device in terms of shipping it back to ATI. If they’ve deemd the SD components a “silencer”, I am concerned about the legality of simply shipping this back to ATI. I’m hoping for more details from the ATI folks.

They should also post a serial number range for the rifles affected. Apparently there was a design change in the process and some are good to go while others are not.

ATFs position is that a single port would result in a single baffle suppressor.

If that is the case I wonder why they do not object to the Noveske KX3 (flaming pig) as it’s cone design truely makes it a “one baffel” suppressor.

I’m taking my GSG-5 to the range on Saturday sans barrel shroud, as it is en route to ATI for replacement. We’ll see how it shoots :slight_smile:

Buck, if I may suggest perhaps a title edit is in order as this does not affect all GSG-5 owners, only GSG-5SD owners.

How is that American Tactical optic rail working out? My first-gen GSG-5 shoots WAY high, and is early enough vintage that it doesn’t have interchangeable front sights. So, short of having someone weld up the front sight post, I’m stuck.

UPDATE: I recieved an e-mail from ATI an hour ago. They informed me that they have recieved my old barrel shroud, and they will be shipping a new one to me on Monday.

LHS: That rail is the best I have used so far and I have use a few. They are cheap enough and well worth the money. Put a red dot on your GSG and be done with it. You will never worry about it shooting high again with an adjustable optic.

I got a call, per my request from ATI today. Nice customer service. She stated she got my fake shroud, logged it and put my replacement in the mail today. Faster you can get it in the faster the turn around time. Now I can sigh in relief…ha

Gotta agree, ATI’s customer service was great. I emailed them directly to confirm everything, shipped my shroud the same day and had the replacement maybe 3 days later.

Got my replacement fake ATF approved suppressor today in the mail. Looks identical to the old one, took 3 days. Happy Camper!!

Hey Bobcat,

It looks absolutely identical to the old one from the outside. The only difference is that it’s not as hollow on the inside, which makes it a little heavier. I like it better since it feels more real actually. But side by side, can’t tell the difference.
