Atlanta Carjacking Goes Poorly for Perp

Excellent video.

I think the dude handles himself well, and his interaction with the responding officer is pretty telling of Georgia’s attitude towards firearms and self-defense.

My favorite line is, “So you just woke up stupid this morning?”

An East Point man held a would-be carjacker at gunpoint until police arrived and arrested the suspect, according to Atlanta police.

Hashim Fannin, the car owner, says the attempted carjacking occurred just after he had pulled into a parking spot at the Family Dollar on Marietta Boulevard in northwest Atlanta earlier this month.

Fannin says the man slipped into the passenger’s seat when his doors automatically unlocked.

“He told me, ‘You know what this is,’” Fannin said. That is when Fannin says he pulled his gun out.

“I asked him to get out the car, probably not in those exact words,” Fannin said.

“I told him no, there’s no leaving, leaving was before you hopped into my car … at this point there is not leaving,” Fannin said.

The car owner kept the suspect, Edgar Horn, 61, at gunpoint face down in the parking lot for several minutes until police arrived.

“You were not trying to rob me,” Fannin said to the man on cellphone video of the incident. “Do you just get into random people’s cars … you thought I was your friend … you thought I was your friend … so you woke up stupid this morning?”

When police arrived, you can see Fannin wave them over, and put his gun down. The police officer shakes his hand, before putting the suspect in handcuffs.

“Honestly, I look at it like this. That is one less guy I got to worry about bothering my mom when she’s out grocery shopping,” Fannin said.

According to a police report, the suspect was arrested for attempted robbery and entering an automobile.

Normally I’m about “saying less is more” to the suspect, especially on video, but it was funny.

WTH is a 61 YO jacking cars? [emoji50]

Except for the chit chat, he did just about everything right. I thought he was going to cite him Ezekiel 25:17.

I hate that this wouldn’t fly in Minnesota, a person holding a CCW permit and holding a guy down at gun point would qualify as a threat of terror. “You should have let him take the car and not waived a gun around.” the prosecutor would probably say.

There probably is something to controlling the suspect with words rather than physical force or deadly force. Not everyone can get away with it obviously.

Fannin did seem to be firmly in control of the incident.

“I told him no, there’s no leaving, leaving was before you hopped into my car … at this point there is not leaving,”

Thankfully arriving officers understood what was what and the loose chatter wasn’t a problem. I’m sure some defense lawyer will try and take issue with it, but unless Horn has a pretty spotless criminal record it won’t amount to much.

I think it’s safe to say no one has a problem that the gun owner was black and the perp was white and the gun owner prevented harm to his person and or possessions via the use of a handgun. However we all know if their colors had been reversed we would be hearing the wailing of institutionalized racism. With all the sensationalized headlines from Trayvon Martin to Freddie Gray we never stop hearing about it . . .

A win for the good guys color of epidermis be damned!
