After 30 years of sooting ARs and dozens of configurations, at last I have arrived at what I think is an excellent General Purpose build.
Noveske N4 16" midlength barrel
DD M4A1 RAS II handguard
TA31F ACOG
PRI BUIS
Giessele SSA trigger
Weight w/BUIS: 7 lbs. 4 oz. This is a tad lighter than the configuration it replaced, which was built around a Denny’s Operator 16" barrel and DD Lite HG. I prefer the RAS II because it has a smaller OD, and the Operator was a bit heavier profile, and had a fixed front sight.
This rifle fits in between the capabilities of my Lightweight barrel carbines, and my Medium/Heavy Precision rifles. The high-quality CHF barrel and ACOG gives it greater capability at extended ranges, without the weight penalty of the Precision rifles.
Funny how many people all come around to simple setups as the best setups. Some people need the extra stuff, some don’t. We can only hope each one of us will realize what is really needed and what isn’t.
Here are some of the previous iterations of my GP rifle:
Operator 16" Midlength Midweight barrel:
Centurion 16" Midlength Midweight CHF barrel:
The Operator had a heavier barrel, and the fixed FSB was annoying when using an Aimpoint. For the Centurion build I used a PRI folding front BUIS- excellent, but I decided it was anachronistic. Also, the Centurion barrel had a heavier profile than the N4; that and the FFS/GB made it heavier overall than the N4 build. Plus, I prefer the DD M4A1 RIS II for its smaller OD.
What is the weight difference between the N4 and Centurion midweight barrels (stripped)? I had an N4 upper with MUR & rifle URX that felt a bit nose heavy. I wish I had weighed the upper for comparison, but I didn’t. I’m curious how two exact configurations would differ in weight with each barrel?
