At last....my Ultimate General Purpose rifle

After 30 years of sooting ARs and dozens of configurations, at last I have arrived at what I think is an excellent General Purpose build.

Noveske N4 16" midlength barrel
DD M4A1 RAS II handguard
TA31F ACOG
PRI BUIS
Giessele SSA trigger

Weight w/BUIS: 7 lbs. 4 oz. This is a tad lighter than the configuration it replaced, which was built around a Denny’s Operator 16" barrel and DD Lite HG. I prefer the RAS II because it has a smaller OD, and the Operator was a bit heavier profile, and had a fixed front sight.

This rifle fits in between the capabilities of my Lightweight barrel carbines, and my Medium/Heavy Precision rifles. The high-quality CHF barrel and ACOG gives it greater capability at extended ranges, without the weight penalty of the Precision rifles.

That is a pretty a"wes"ome rifle. I think you have hit on a winning combination there.

Funny how many people all come around to simple setups as the best setups. Some people need the extra stuff, some don’t. We can only hope each one of us will realize what is really needed and what isn’t.

Great rifle.

Here are some of the previous iterations of my GP rifle:

Operator 16" Midlength Midweight barrel:

Centurion 16" Midlength Midweight CHF barrel:

The Operator had a heavier barrel, and the fixed FSB was annoying when using an Aimpoint. For the Centurion build I used a PRI folding front BUIS- excellent, but I decided it was anachronistic. Also, the Centurion barrel had a heavier profile than the N4; that and the FFS/GB made it heavier overall than the N4 build. Plus, I prefer the DD M4A1 RIS II for its smaller OD.

That is cool. I’d go with an ASAP and MS2, but that is personal preference. I like an ACOG vs RDS because it is a rifle, not a stabilized handgun.

Nice evolution of the vertical grip

Great set up. Nice choice of BUIS. Sold several sets of Troys for PRIs.

Great looking set-up you have there.

That is a very nice setup! Seems like the perfect all around rifle.

Looks like a great “Jeep” rifle.

Simple, clean, and effective. I dig your style

Wes, did you get to shoot the Centurion for groups before you sold it? I’m curious how the N4 compares in accuracy.

So it is just the difference of the barrel and rail?

I really like a handy 16" with a low powered optic, you are right it is the Ultimate General Purpose rifle, no wonder the SEALs like the Recce.

Nice build.

What is the weight difference between the N4 and Centurion midweight barrels (stripped)? I had an N4 upper with MUR & rifle URX that felt a bit nose heavy. I wish I had weighed the upper for comparison, but I didn’t. I’m curious how two exact configurations would differ in weight with each barrel?

The different barrel weights and specs can be found here in rob_s’s chart…

Verrry nice rifle!

I’m a newbie, and I “don’t know nothing”. Out of curiosity, why isn’t there a light on that gun?

Great looking rifle. I like the clean look. Which ACOG are you using?

Wes, I see you may be online as we speak? I was wondering if you had changed your mind about the FTF on the barrel sales?
Dan

Nice choice on the barrel. Good ballance between accuracy and durability.

Why the RAS II over the lighter 12" Lite Rail?

I don’t think so. Rob’s chart appears to list the LW version of the Centurion barrel. Wes used the mid weight which was previously offered by Monty.

No light yet…one thing at a time!
