Artificial Sweeteners

Do you avoid them? Do you feel they affect your health? I’m debating if I want to cut them out of my diet.

Well we are on it- thoughts on fluoridated water and aluminium in deodorant? Bad, neutral…

Thanks

ALL artificial sweeteners make me sick in some way or another. Aspertaim, Equal, Sweet & Low, and the other one (Yellow package). The make me short of breath and put a funny tingle in my throat. The very little amount of soda I drink, I will take the sugar of a regular instead of a diet soda. Same goes for coffee.
Water, I rarely drink tap water.
Deodorant, I need it…:sarcastic:

I am sure artificial sweeteners are bad for you, but not nearly as bad as refined sugar. So it is essentially the less of two evils.

A natural, naturally zero calorie sweetener is Stevia. Not going to help you out much if you have a soda addiction, but is great for tea and coffee.

There is an interesting article in this month’s Men’s Journal about the negative aspects of them. I was going to shoot it over to Will Brink to get his views on it but maybe he can weigh in here.

i try to avoid them mostly because of the aftertaste that i get from some of them

I made the switch from anti perspirant to deoderant a few months back, my tinfoil is probably on to tight. I drink a lot of tap water. I have tried to avoid sucralose and the like as much as I can, it seems to be in everything from pre work out sups to gum. Thanks for the input.

I actually asked my doctor about this subject a few years ago… The wife was giving me grief about putting crystal light in my water…

Doctor basically aid that too much of ANYTHING will kill you. I wouldn’t worry about it.

With that said, I flavor my water most of the time because I drink so much of it. I will NEVER pass a kidney stone.

I had a really bad flu last winter. Every time I started to get better I noticed a relapse every other day or so. After about a week of this rollercoaster ride I realized that every time I had consumed a soda pop with Aspartame in it I felt worse. I avoid Aspartame like the plague now.

Use Splenda. No aspartame. Better for you than sugar.

I try to avoid them all as much as possible, but I specifically avoid Splenda like the plague. Let’s just say my gastrointestinal tract and Splenda do not get along well. I once made the mistake of consuming a “sugar free” (a.k.a. “Splenda-loaded”) fruit smoothie at the Atlanta Airport just prior to an hours-long international flight. It was not a pleasant trip, to say the least.

My in-laws use Stevia. I tried it once in my coffee and dumped the mug down the sink. It must be an acquired taste.

I use Sugar in the Raw (otherwise known as turbinado sugar) in my coffee. I’m not sure if the turbinado is any better/worse for you than regular refined white sugar, but I much prefer the taste.

Sugar in the raw simply has minute amounts of the original molasses left in it. Otherwise it is just tastier sugar…

The data does not seem to find any issues with them, but you should also indicate which sweeteners.

My general rule, I don’t actively avoid them, but as with most things in life, if there are some potential risks, moderation is key.

A few cans a week of Diet Coke is fine, 12 cans per day, not so much…

That’s pretty much what I use, unless for coffee on the weekends, then I use Bailey’s as a cream and sugar substitute.

I won’t have anything to do with artificial sweeteners - you are better off using processed white sugar (of course, it is better for your health if you use an un-proccessed sugarcane product.)

Here is just one two of many articles that I can mention that discusses one of the many issues with artificial sweeteners.

Mostly sucralose and what ever they put crystal light. I use crystal light every day I work out for my caffeine powder and creatine mix.

I hate artifical sweetners but if I had to chose one I would pick Stevia. Honey is a great alternative especially if you can get local honey from local plants, plus it never goes bad.

Now I have been trying to find whey and casein protein without the artificial sweeteners and its almost impossible. I did find mrm for whey and gold standard for casein. Seems most of the supps use artificial sweeteners.

I use Splenda if I am going to use an artificial sweetener. But I try to avoid them. Having said that, I do make ice cream with 1/2 splenda and 1/2 Agave syrup. You cannot taste a thing in it other than goodness. And when I bake, I use 1/2 splenda and 1/2 sugar to cut down on calories, if at all possible.

I also avoid white sugar. Simple carbs are not great for your system. I use Agave syrup most of the time as a sweetener. Both on things (as a sweetener in smoothies, on cereal, on pancakes, with a small dollop of maple syrup to the mostly agave) as well as in them (cooking and baking and ice cream)

Agave syrup has a lower glycemic index and affects your blood sugar in a less drastic way. Some of the agave syrups are also more raw and have fiber, calcium, and other good things in them. I like this one:

though I buy other brands as well as needed.

I don’t think Stevia is an “artificial” sweetener. It is a natural product from the genus “Stevia” with “Stevia rebaudiana” being the one mostly grown for making the sweetener.

My SIL is way into it. I don’t really care for the taste myself but in low concentrations is ok.

I’ve found that the better shape I’m in, the less sweeteners affect me. That and the less of a sweet tooth I have, so the less sweetened stuff I care to eat.
