AR's only?

I’ve been thinking of staying with the AR’s only, loosing the 2 AK’s. I like them, but they are range pieces only, I can’t say never, but I don’t ever see using them in any capacity, even if the 40 pigmies drop from the sky.

Hawkeye-you started this ----------

I think everyone needs an AK (just bought one myself). The positives on them is that they will eat just about any ammo and is the weapon of choice for our enemies. So knowing how to operate the weapon properly is a good idea.

I’m with Grant.

Everyone should own at least one.

It’s hard to argue against owning an AK.

Blame me why dont you.

You know my thoughts…

I have run and can run an AK. I’ll take my AR. Not much I find appealing personally about an AK, not to mention ammo is getting harder and harder to find inany quantity and the price is steadily going up. Prices and availability on .223/5.56 is bad enough without having to try and stock 7.62x39 as well. Think of all the mags, ammo, spare parts, range time, and accessories you could get for your AR’s with the $$ from the AK’s.
(Oh, and more GLOCK mags too. )

In an ideal world with unlimited time and money, I’d own all kinds of stuff that served no purpose other than my own amusement. But given the contraints I live under, I have to do my best to maintain competency with just a handful of systems: the 5.56mm AR platform, 9mm Glocks, and 4" S&W .44 mag Mountain Gun. I would love to spend time shooting AKs, 1911s, SIGs, Hi-Powers, precision rifles, shotguns, and lots of the other cools stuff that’s been released lately. But that’s time and money that takes away from maintaining my skills with the AR, Glock and Smith. Do I buy a new toy gun like an AK or SIG 556? Or do I buy ammo and attend a class this year to increase my skills with the weapon I know I’ll use when I must? Tough decisions.

Added to this is the commitment I’ve made to myself to outfit every member of my family (wife and two kids) with a minimum weapon set (an M4 with 10 magazines and Glock 19 with 5 magazines) within the next 18 months. Until I win the lottery, my toy guns and my ‘go-to’ guns will have to be the same.

But if you guys want to donate an AK to me, I’ll be sure to put it into the training rotation…

Why don’t you sign up for the third Vickers class and learn the real pros and cons of the system first?

I’m down to nothing but ARs and 1911s. I’m much happier that way.

I’m pretty pragmatic about this kind of thing…

I own FAL’s, M14’s, AR’s, and AK’s.

Each system has it’s plusses and minuses.

If we’re looking at a serious use rifle, run with what you use best.

Personally, I use an AK-74 better than any of them, and while I’m a fairly high drag, low speed kind of guy, I usually come in the top 5 of a practical rifle competition using an iron sighted AK-74 against guys using “tactical” AR systems. I realize that these are competitions and not real life, but it’s firing a rifle under stress, in movement, on multiple targets (that have the good manners not to shoot back) as fast as I can while maintaining cover.

It’s what you know.

What does tick me off though is someone who’s never used a quality AK bashing the system. Get to know it before you make up your mind, and don’t just spew off the bullshit that runs rampant.

The same goes for AK guys who bash the AR.

I have no problems with the 2 Colt AR’s I have, I enjoy them and I’d feel as comfortable as anyone could if I had to use it in a Katrina type situation, but I’d do better with an AK.

Ammo for AK’s isn’t hard to find. Yes, it’s more expensive than what it was last year, but everything is, and it’s still about half the price of good 5.56mm, and you can get very high quality AK’s in 5.56mm now.

So, I don’t begrudge anyone their choice of rifle, just learn the system and get as proficient with it as you can.

Ok, off my soapbox.

I certainly hope this wasn’t directed towards me.

I like to keep my inventory simple. I can run an AK, I can run whatever if it has a trigger. I’m not bashing anything or any system, I just like the AR’s more so than anything else.

If someone doesn’t care to use any weapon as a primary, then that’s the way it is. It doesn’t mean that it’s bad or they don’t know how to use it.

I’m signed up for the first, for now

Templar wasn’t directing that comment at you or anyone here. He was speaking about the attitudes at another site towards AKs and about the attitudes he sees towards ARs somewhere else. I’ll explain later

You better keep an AK long enough to attend the Vickers class in March. I think, after that class, you’ll want to keep at least one around

Hell no, not at you at all. I know you know your way around an AK, and you’ve certainly had the high end models.

I was referring to the internet and “real world” BS that you hear concerning each system, wasn’t aimed at any one here at all.

No worries Bub:cool:

Dang, I’m thinking:confused:

Grant, You should talk me into the sale, more sales for you!

LOL, I have a Yugo underfolder for you my friend!

Great! I look forward to meeting you and shooting with you!

Have you decided which carbine you’ll be using in the class?

I would like to someday own a SKS and/or AK variant, but neither is on my top 4 list as of now, however, they will one day be there.

Right now my gun cabinet is full, and I will have to soon be looking for another to take it’s place. It’s sad when I don’t even have room for all the firearms I have on hand, and several of them are relegated to being stored in sealed bags, and enclosed in gun cases.

My short list includes the following:

  1. Another AR lower (for the kids)
  2. Hunting caliber bolt action (Likely to be a Savage Arms)
  3. 12 Ga Shotgun (Remington or Mossburg
  4. S&W M&P in 9mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP (I just can’t decide)

Well, depending-Norinco 56S and Vector w/DDR side folder-

I think the Norinco would be great choice - you might get beat up by that DDR stock on the Vector, though.

I’ve got nothing against the AK. Hell, I like them a lot. But I like the AR better and any time spent at a range or in a class with an AK would be time I could have spent with an AR. One of these days I’ll be able to get to a range more often, but until then ARs and pistols are all I shoot.
