When the Arredondo +6 extension is added I have feeding issues. Seems like the rounds are binding which result in a failure to feed.
Anyone else ever have this problem?
I have the extra power spring added too. I have taken the mag apart a few times and put back together. I have also looked down the mag body and don’t see anything that could cause an issue.
I would never use magazine extensions in my pistol for anything beyond screwing around. The only competition that I would want them for would be speed steel, and I certainly don’t want them for carry.
How do you know the spring is any good at all and that that isn’t the source of your feeding issues?
I ordered the same kit from the Arredondo website about a year ago. Mine were for my Glock 22 duty weapon. Was going to leave them on my heavy vest for SRT operations. Ordered the full kit, with the +10% Wolff spring.
Initial test firing with them went well. I was extremly pleased, no malfunctions in 250 rounds. So I loaded them up with 20 rounds each and slipped them into my mag pouches.
The next time I took them out to the range (don’t use them every range trip, usually use my patrol gear) was a couple months latter. When I as downloading the duty rounds out of them, I noticed that the follower seemed to lose tension about 10 rounds in, then pick up again with full tension around round 15 or so. Loaded them up to 20 with some range ammo, started shooting. 10 rounds, slide lock, speed reload, finish drill.
When I picked up the mag a few rounds fell out the top because of the stuck follower. Slapped it on the plate, and the follower snapped into place. Problem repeated about 2 or 3 more times that day.
Problem isn’t every time, but they are no longer duty magazines.
In Taylors book on the Glock in competition he warns against using 147 grain bullets. seems that many rds being nose heavy creates a problem.
Also your spring may be too tight… try loading it with say 5 rds, does it still do it??
I agree that magazine extensions can be iffy on carry guns.
That said, Ken Hackathorn and I have both used the Arredondo extensions for years on Glock 17 and 19 mags respectively. I bought the +4 round extensions on Ken’s advice and, despite being pretty sure they would suck, they have been working fine for a few years now. The only time I’ve had any issues was using the +4s on a Gen 3 Glock 22 RTF with a light and shooting weak-hand only. Basically I was trying to make the gun malfunction and the combo of the light, weak hand only, and the extensions did it. The factory magazines without extensions ran fine so I tend to believe that they work okay as long as everything else is in check. They do seem to have less margin of error.
I know some units that have had extremely good luck with Dawson extensions with their G19s FWIW.
I also know of places that have dumped the factory OEM G22 magazines because of major reliability issues.
The condensed version is that you may be able to get away with certain extensions on certain guns but they are not as reliable as the correct, unmodified, factory length OEM magazine. I continue to run my +4 Arredondos on my 9mm magazines but not on the .40 magazines. I also realize that, even on the 9mm magazines, I am losing some level of intrinsic reliability even though it has not yet surfaced in the form of malfunctions.
If something causes you to wonder if it’s okay to use it probably isn’t.
I had a similar problem with my Arredondo +6’s for my G17 mags. I contacted Arredondo and for some reason, my extensions were an “older” design. They immediately shipped me replacement parts and I have not had any problems.
If you didn’t buy the extensions from Arredondo direct, they might be the older design which would sometimes bind. I suggest that you contact Arredondo to find out. Good luck.
I have been using the +5 extensions on my Glock 17 mags for three gun for the last summer with no issues and several matches. If they keep working good I will use them for duty mags.

I use the Arredondo extensions on 3 of my m&p mags and used the stock 17 rd spring because they weren’t as stiff and haven’t had any malfunctions. Haven’t tried them with the springs they came with due to that fact.
