I stand Corrected, Carry on Cadets.
You have to remember that they had to go through a large amount of Bull Shit before this event. I bet they had been sitting in that room for at least 2hrs and that is after lots of security crap and threats from superiors to clap at the right times. Also, lots of the Cadets in that room probbly didn’t vote for their CinC and were doing their best to ignore him the best they could.
my .02
There’s something about the way Obama speaks, that I tend to zone out during his speeches too.
You were doing fine with the explanation until you brought the unnecessary political crap into it. Let’s chalk it up to them having endured a full day, only to then endure what probably felt like an even longer day just to get into that auditorium and get a seat, and then be there under hot and excessive lighting.
Personally, I would have fell a sleep too with that vague, non specific speech.
Besides, The Cadets have probably been through tons of shit prior (Academics, Varsity sports (mandatory), Mil training, prep for inspections, being harassed by upperclassmen, been up since 0400, etc…)
Think back to Basic. How many times did you want to nod off in the middle of some class of training evolution? Now imagine doing basic and taking 18 units of coursework at the same time!
If I were them I’d be thinking that if they made a presentation like that they’d flunk. He’s had more time and resources to make that speech, and it was no where as detailed as a senior thesis paper.
I’d be clapping with less than full vigor if I were sitting there and thinking that this is the plan I might die for. Troops listening to Stalin’s speeches against the Germans must have had similar thoughts, “That’s the plan?”.
At least the Freshman don’t have to worry about serving there?
They go through plenty of crap as it is than to sit there through a speech accusing the mil/CIA of torture at Gitmo, basically telling them when you graduate I want you to go fight and maybe die so I can pull everyone out right before the next election, and of course all the vile shit he has said about the military in the past. You know like accusing our troops of bombing villages and killing civilians.
Its sorta like Sarah Brady giving a speech at the NRA convention except you are “forced” to show respect and clap at key points in her speech.
I would have chosen to fall asleep if I too had to listen to that nitwit. That is of course if I wasn’t throwing up…
Exactly.
I just don’t understand why he always has to give a speech in front of a crowd of whomever the speech is related to, like the bullshit speech with the doctors where they handed white coats out beforehand. The campaign is over, give it a break.
Its the Madison Avenue/High Art approach…place a picture of a pile of dog shit into a nice frame and the dumbshits of the world will buy it because it “looks good”.
First Classmen cry on national TV after losing four straight to Navy, too.
BEAT ARMY!
Will Mocha Man be at the Army-Navy game?
It wasn’t a mission or safety brief and the President can bore the hell out of any of us. I was personally upset with a fool that thinks he can just name the date when a war will end. If it’s so easy to do then why don’t we just say the war is won today and re-deploy?
Falling asleep during an “important” speech?..
It happens.
they were falling asleep because obama’s an uninteresting, unimpressive fag, and there’s no point paying any attention to anything he says because it’s all bullshit anyway.
you’d have to seek out illicit drugs to find a better sedative than that half-dead, monotonous, unfelt drone and those hour long pauses as the teleprompter lags his speech to the black pit bottom of hell.
besides, a good soldier knows to grab sleep when he can, and there couldn’t be a better time. if they were my boys, everyone who fell asleep would get cake.
The life of a WP cadet is pretty busy…and it’s right at time for finals and final projects. I would imagine that a number of cadets in that room have spent long hours in front of a computer in a lab or in their dorm room working on papers and/or projects in addition to all the other stuff that WP cadets have to put up with on a daily basis.
It’s also natural to fall asleep during something like that. I’ve dozed off in similar circumstances plenty of times.
It’s not a big deal. Getting pissed off because some cadets dozed off while a politician was preening on stage is ridiculous.
Ok, I may have stepped over the edge a bit, I can admit when I went too far. it was a bit aggrivating at the time seeing all the cadets asleep, but you guys are right I have to give credit where credit is due. They did make it into West Point, so they have some potential. I deal with Officers everyday, so perhaps Im just a little jaded. You guys are right, and I didnt highlight anythign Political in my previous rant because we all knew it was going to be fluff and buff. I just hope that in this 30K troop ramp-up within 6 months that it means my unit gets slated for early spring instead of waiting till next fall!
Thanks guys again, Ill try to keep a better perspective!
~Rant Off~
Would that be the same political crap where my relatives sworn into military service had to endure (ordered) handshakes with female Clinton for a “woman to woman/ er…ice queen” photo op? Or the BS political events where people were herded into a corner of a room for a photo op, just to make the venue look crowed, at 10% capacity, and cops couldn’t be seen unless requested/ordered/ or agency heads?
Unless the CinC is there to press the flesh on the cadet’s turf, on a person to person basis, with a group that isn’t hand picked, it is a load of political crap.
Kudos to the Cadets for catching Zs where they can. Don’t care who they voted for, I only respect what they are doing.
John_Wayne777,
I worked as a TACNCO at West Point for two years and you preety much nailed it. The life of a cadet runs preety much none stop and they don’t even get to party;) Lights Out was 10:30 or 11:00 if I remember correctly, but you usualy could find cadets working on projects after lights out or up at 4:30 to work before first call. Exams are coming up, so I’m sure many were smoked.
Go Frogs!
They had to be in their seats at 4:00pm for a televised 8:00 speech. I don’t care who you are, that’s too long, especially after a hard day.
Personally, I would have taken the day off sick…![]()
