Hello everyone,
New to this site. Recommended from a friend.
I have searched online and only found one armorers course for civilians. They all seem to cater to the LEO. Why is that?
Thanks in advance.

Because those of us who are LEOs are stuck with massive amounts of liability, and our departments are willing to pay more for classes.
Sully teaches an armorer course which I thought was open to everyone.
Where do you live?
Hello Shihan,
I live in Northern Virginia. Leesburg area.

Dean Caputo teaches a - by all accounts - pretty darn good class that more than addresses the functioning & workings of the system. If you don’t need Armorer but need to know the How side it might be a very viable classes.
It is an excellent class: how the gun runs and how to keep it running, not how to disassemble the A2 rear sight. And there is one in NC on a weekend (how convenient) in September which is open to earth people:

FWIW almost all armorers courses really don’t teach you much. They teach you how to detail assemble/disassemble the firearms. And how to troubleshoot the firearm.
Caputo will teach you things you wouldn’t learn at an armorers course. Things that might take years of use to figure out. I hear Sullys class is good too.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I am looking to purchase an AR-15 and would like to have the knowlegde of working on it. I would rather not have all the springs in the lower receiver flying across the room and then not know how they go back in. ![]()
I currently own an AGI video for my Ruger Mini-14 and 1991A1. They are not bad in my opinion.
Stickman thanks for your service in your community. What did you mean by you carry all the liability?
Thanks again. -Michael
As Joe Civillian the factory does not want you working on your gun as you might ham hand it, later sell it to someone, the weapon breaks and the current owner will curse the factory up one side and down the other for putting out a piece of shit. Also the other side of it is that they would prefer to charge you to make mods and keep their folks employed in between govt contracts.
Also Armorer’s knowledge is a controlled item under the ITAR and no factory wants to assume the liability for teaching something to someone who is not cleared. Thus its easier to just restrict the course to Mil/LEO.
I have been on contracts where only certain ammounts of maintenance information was allowed to be released. This was to an allied nation, who had approval for the purchase, use and some maintenance on the weapons system, but not a total brain dump.

There are few who avail themselves of this as of now Paul.
Either they all feel they know it all, or they want a less useful armorers course (less useful to the shooters that is…)S/F

I have also been thinking for some time of taking an armorer’s course, but after reading this I must assume that may be exceptionally difficult here in N.J., especially for a non-LEO. But I could be wrong, of course. Any remotely possible suggestions?
When is a good indepth Colt Armorers course for LEO in NC, near Greenville? I want to get COLT Armorer certified so I can work on my Patrol M4Gery and be my Dept. Armorer. And Free to LEO.
LukeMacGillie,
I have seen this happen in other areas. People taking factory classes and still manage to screw up someones unit. When I purchase my AR-15 a Mr. Dean Caputo class is soon to follow!
Thanks for the replies and a better understanding of this topic.
Sincerely,
Michael
How does a civilian become an Armorer for an Agency or say a company like Blackwater or other private firms, if all the armorer courses are for LEO/MIL? But everywhere wants Factory Cert. Armorers.![]()
Because we have a DoD contractor ID card or the agency in question sponsors you and lays the groundwork for you with the company. Barrett is open to the public last I checked (there were several civilians in my class) and I am sure there are others. I don’t know much about Sullys class, but that may be a good course for you. What is it, that you are actually trying to accomplish? Are you trying to get armorers certs for future employment?
