Armored car heists...plural

He had mentioned this question being asked recently and lo and behold…

Yea, it’s pot money! Sucks regardless of your thoughts on weed. Legal in CA, NOT Legal on the Fed level, so basically the Sherriff is taking the cash turns it in, and gets an 80% kickback from the Feds !! Ya can’t make this shit up! Read about this a week or so ago, pretty crazy.

Because it is more than just cash that gets taken as evidence. Drugs, guns, stolen cars more to it than just pulling someone over and them having cash on them. Pulled a lawyer over and he had a console full of loose cash and made a show of digging through it to find his registration. Miami sent me some paper work to serve a guy in our county because they stopped a jamaican national at the airport with closebto $200,000 cash and seized it. Turns out is was scam money that had passed through a guy’s account in our county and they wanted him to come down and prove it was his legally. He lived in a crappy car lot full of junk cars so most likely not his by right. He never got the papers as he was in ICU for covid.

You do get a portion of items seized from drug busts because they have to prove they purchased the items legally. Alot of the drug money goes into accounts for purchasing training for officers or new equipment.

Majority of the fed hold guys in our jail are there for drug and gun violations.

Evidence as part of a legit crime with day in court and all that stuff is one thing while civil asset forfeiture is something else.

Alot of times the money gets documented as part of the crime then you have to apply to the feds to get your prercentage back. The point was someone travelling with a large some of money is not a crime and there is more to it justifying the siezure.

Plenty of body cam footage where the justification is the officer allegedly believes cash was involved in a crime(but the person is not charged with any crime) so it gets seized and then they have to sue to get it back so even if they win they still lose.

I have just one thing to say to any advocate of guilty-til-proven-innocent Asset Forfeiture…

Prove YOU’RE not a child molester.

See what I did there?

Asset seizure is theft. The American people should treat it as such

I think that the word you are looking for is theft. Or perhaps klepto-something….its right on the tip of my tongue.

Edit: TMS 951 beat me to it!

Armed robbery is closer to the truth.

Good grief, “law enforcement” really isn’t trying to hide the fact that they’re just organized crime anymore, are they? At least this “sheriff” isn’t. Hell, this isn’t just a problem with LE, but rather with our entire justice system. Yet another crime committed in the name of the “war on drugs.”

What’s more disgusting is that my own damn state, Kansas is doing the same. Their justification is a bit less shakey than the CA Sheriff’s, as the evil plant is still illegal here, but this is ridiculous.

Yep, our justice system is failing, openly defying its own rules and political masters, and getting away with it. If you have money, the government will find a way to seize it. No protection for the little people if the State dislikes you. And what happens when the armored car crew decides (or are ordered) not to pull over? Or the rent-a-cops decide to do their job and defend the company’s money?

This, so much of this…

Agreed!
