That was the first thing that popped up in my head when I saw the pic. It just needs a slick sided upper, wood stock and handguard, no suppressor, a crowned barrel, and a nice hunting scope on it and you’d have the most boring excuse for an AR ever. BUT… you’d be cool in California. I really feel sorry for you CA dudes. I would personally save all that money spent on building featureless rifles and relocate to Texas.
My apologies for the confusion, Koshin. I was speaking of the situation n California. For some reason they banned mag caps of greater than ten rounds of featureless self loading rifles that do not have detachable mags. (Apology for spelling. For some reason my letter “eye” and “cay” stopped worqng. Have to rely on spell check)
For example an M14 in California with a flash suppressor must have a fixed mag with a cap no greater than 10 rounds because a flash suppressor is a “feature”. But an M14 with a compensator or no muzzle device becomes a featureless rifle and can use a standard mag with a capacity of greater than ten rounds as long as the mag is detachable. If you had mags in state before the ban they are legal to use in a featureless rifle. Thus the SCR would allow someone who legally possessed AR mags with a capacity of greater than ten rounds in the state of California to use them legally

Yeah, thanks – I live there, I’m familiar with the ridiculous nuances of California firearms laws, and made the statement I did quite intentionally. Notice I said, “anything with an off-list lower”. Any 6920 purchased in the last couple years is going to be included in the off-list-lower family.
Regardless, having a bullet button and a 10-round mag is not exactly what I’d consider a major modification to the AR-15 design. Certainly not anywhere near the extent that the Ares rifle changes the design.
I think the Ares rifle is a great counter to the entire asinine basis of cosmetic features counting toward some mythical lethality of the rifle in the mind of gun control folks. At least, last year such measures pushed Cali into the brink of banning all semiautomatic rifles entirely…which, like the Peruta case did with CCW, would have had great unintended consequences for the anti-RKBA forces in the long term.
Like someone else said, I’m surprised it took until 2014 for someone to do this. The modularity of Eugene Stoner’s design is the anti gunners nemesis. If that whole modified bolt with rat tail thing runs reliably and can be run hard I see this in my future. Things like this are bitter sweet… I love that we beat the cosmetic feature nazis at there own game but hate that the game ever has to be played.
While I am in agreement that Cal state laws are asinine, the only “configuration” change required on something like a 6920 (anything with an off-list lower) is the addition of a bullet button. Everything else on the rifle can stay exactly as it is in a “free state” with the bullet button installed.
This I know, my AR is currently set up like this. But I would rather go featureless if I could; the problem is that none of the current featureless options for an AR really work or look anything worth a damn.
I’m still wondering where the buffer tube went…

someday rifles like this will be in museums. limited in number, odd in look and function (probably worth a crapton). firearms historians will recall that these were made because of confusing legal parameters placed on law abiding citizens.

Most photos shown with an optic show a T1 mounted directly to the rails, no riser.
Should work similarly for low powered scopes.

Kidding aside, I think its a good work-around to the comical gun laws in many states. Doesn’t look bad at all IMO.
If the low comb is an issue, there are tons of lower mounts that can work, especially if it’s something like that MOE handguard bottom AR upper in the OP’s image - just run low rings or a low aimpoint Micro mount and you’re there.
