Are PMCs subject to the same ammo restrictions as government militaries?

It is all determined by contract. Usually it’s what US Mil use, if they are contracted by a USG agency.

Last thing I read was out of a Joint Chiefs directive that weapons ammo etc were all to be DoD based… I’ll see if I can find it

Resupply in the field is an issue with the type of operation they ran. A lot of what they used was collected from the people they were fighting.

That was a different time involving different governments. When they contracted with Sierra Leone and Angola resupply in the field was often done by collecting material from people they were fighting.

EO in Angola? What does that have to do with M193/M855, specifically US DOD ammunition?

It was the only documented case I could think of off the top of my head which wasn’t a US contract.

DoD and DoS contracts are either issued ammunition or advised to use ammunition that is lawful in conflict. PMC’s operate on the cheap, their goal is to make money and they are not going to buy ammunition that costs .65-1.00 per round.

We issued only M193/M855 or equivalent. We also had some small stocks of MK262 MOD1 and it was never handed out. DoS personnel use standard 5.56 ammo and 9mm Hydrashok for handguns.

EO and all the similar kinds of groups have zero to do with DoD/DoS contracts or regulations. Though they would still need to abide by the Hague and St. Petersburg Declarations, etc… in theory.

Great info, thanks. The cost-effectiveness aspect is important, hadn’t thought of that. Too bad they can’t use modern expanding ammunition.
