I can’t understand the reasoning when people throw in the mag price as a deal breaker when purchasing a $1k+ rifle.

Sounds like you’re potentially looking at a high quality G3. At that point, look up the relative features, pros/cons of the G3 to FAL and decide for yourself. Both can be good. If you get a FAL, get a DSA or a quality gunsmith build, anything else is not in the same quality league.
You should call ArmaLite and see if they are still in the business of preban mag body trading. During the ban, they would convert M14 mag bodies to AR10 mags by cutting the notches. You would send your preban M14 mag to them, they would send you the follower and body.
You put your spring and floorplate in the preban converted mag body and you’d have an AR10 mag. Problem was, not a lot of people cleaned the mag bodies, inspected the fit, etc and they had some bubba-fied mags, that might work – or not. If you were halfway careful, the kits worked great.
You being in NY, I would verify the supply of preban bodies you can get, otherwise I would look for an FAL.
What type of FAL should he look for guys? Are they as adaptable as the AR I mean can he change out stocks and such?
At this point, I may do 1 of three things: throw in the towel and say screw variety and just get a few more boxes of 556 for my ars, Get the G3 clone offered to me, or buy an AK.
I am a big fan of the G3 and I really enjoy shooting my hk and g3 clone. A couple of questions I would have about the parts build is the barrel FMP, or an american made barrel, what is the bolt gap, and was the rifle put together by a good smith.
FMP. Not sure of the rest
If you are interested in the g3, I would takes some feeler gauges and measure the bolt gap.
If you are not familiar with how to measure it, here is a thread that describes it.

17.7" standard (not K series or HK91 clone )barrel. Built in the 90s with FMP rec. Less than 300 rds fired. Green furniture, 10 preban mags. $1250 shipped. Sounds good and seller has great feedback and is very nice guy.
I can’t measure it as I don’t own it yet. Its not near me. What should the gap be? I’ll ask him.
I live in NJ and have an AR10 A4 (fullsize 20" model). Mine does not have a threaded barrel. Mine was purchased as a used model in the crazyness just after Obama was elected. I’ve only put about 700 or so rounds through the rifle w/ zero issues. As some others have mentioned, w/ the Gen II mags reliability is supposed to have gone up. Accuracy w/ South African 7.62 is about 1.5-2 MOA for 5 rnds.
Bolt gap should be 004" to .020". You want it closer to .020". I would also ask what size rollers are in the bolt.
If the bolt gap is closer to the .020" with standard size rollers you are in good shape.
Basically as you shoot the gun over time your bolt gap decreases, and once it get closer to out of spec you put larger rollers in the bolt to increase the bolt gap. You can only do this so many times before you need to have the barrel repressed. However for this to happen you have to shoot a LOT of rounds through it, or if it was assembled by a CIA monkey…
The price seems pretty good, but before I would just I would like to see detailed pictures of the receiver markings.
if your set on a g3 style rifle another option would be watch gunbroker for a Sar 3. I have seen them sometimes go around the same price point though typically a little higher.

I have a Sar 3 overstamp and a USGI M1A. Pm me and you can take them for a test drive. That might help with your choice. Im 65 miles north of NY Shitty.
Thank you very much. Very nice gesture. If I get the chance soon, I will.
Didn’t the LAR-8 stop being FAL mag compatible some time ago?
The problem with the ArmaLite Gen I mags is many are counterfeit. The originals were built on usgi M14 mags. ArmaLite offered kits so you could convert your existing M14 mags. People put these kits in cheap import M14 mags and found they didn’t always preform well.
I have about a dozen of the Gen I’s and Gen II’s. I do not have any issues with either style. I’m running a 21" N6 Noveske upper on a ArmaLite lower. I’m getting moa with 147gr DAG surplus and 100% reliability.
