AR15A4 DMR Build?

The Bravo Company bolt carrier group in the link below, only comes in the auto version, not semi, from my understanding of the laws from back around the year 2000, the use of any M16 part in a semi-auto, non-NFA rifle would classify that rifle as an illegal machine gun.

On BCM web site, they say that the ATF does not consider a full auto bolt in a semo auto only rifle to be an illegal machine gun. Is this true?

My goal for this build is to build a semi auto only, AR15A4 clone of the DMR that the Marine Corps issues, that is close to mill-spec you can get.

Yes, it is true. There is a post somewhere where the guy had a letter from the ATF stating this is the case.

Legal. Here is the letter.

BCM FA BCGs are GTG.

CAM

Legal.

DD, Colt, BCM and Noveske all ship their semi auto carbines with the F/A carrier. As liability concious as many firms are, no way they’d do this w/o it being legit.

I’d be interested to see the list of parts you’re planning to use

Thanks for the replys.

MistWolf: The following parts i plan to go with so far, keep in mind that nothing is set in stone as of this point, except for the Yankee Hill lower receiver, Daniel Defense LPK and the USGI M4 upper receiver with M4 feed ramps as i have these items in front of me.

AR15A4 DMR Parts

USGI M4 Upper Receiver (This came stripped, i will use BCM or USGI parts that are needed)

Yankee Hill Lower Receiver

Daniel Defense Semi Auto Lower Parts Kit

Bravo Company MPI Bolt Group

CMMG 20 inch Government Profile Barrel, 4150 chrome-moly vanadium steel, 5.56mm 1/7 twist with M4 feed ramps and .750 F marked front sight base.

Buttsock (I would like to find an A2 buttstock that has a true dark black finish, most commerical buttstocks if seen have a more gray look to them then black. Want to use as much USGI parts i can)

BCM AR15 Charging Handle

This is what i have so far.

most commerical buttstocks if seen have a more gray look to them then black.

Very easy to fix.

First rub the plastic down with fine steel wool and then apply an automotive interior product. I prefer ICE as it darkens without adding shine.

Or you can just coat the stock in CLP.

this is my 16A4 clone

i tried to get it as close to my issued a4 as possible, and used many of the same parts you listed. i ended up using a Sabre Defence barrel, as they have a govt contract to make A4 rifles. im very satisfied with the accuracy of this barrel and think it would be worthy of a DMR role.

you will also need a Knights free float rail

most of the A2 stocks will be more gray than black. a little wear and dirt/oil will turn it black

Buszby, did you use a Sabre upper receiver? I am working on coverting a Colt 20" upper to a DMR platform. The KAC rails are nice but $$$$ for me, maybe DD rails instead.

I’m kind of curious as to why you guys aren’t just using the BCM 20in Government Profile uppers. It seems like it take most of guesswork out of the equation.

KAC M5 rails are also a fairly common item to see being sold new by individuals in for sale sections, such as the EE here on M4C or your local firearms board, or even Ebay. They usually sell MUCH cheaper that MSRP.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post Ebay listings on the forum, but if you just search KAC M5 on Ebay there’s currently a whole M5 RAS package (a bunch of rail covers, KAC VFG, and the rails) for $152. Granted it’s Ebay, and that price may go up, but just look around and you’ll get a deal eventually.

i used a sabre barrel in a bcm upper receiver. m4 feed ramps, which are not true m16a4 spec, but why not?

neither bcm nor sabre had complete uppers when i ordered the barrel. at the time the only other gov profile 20" barrel i could find was cmmg, and i don’t think they were f marked fsb.

i do have the m5 knights rail, and they are a great deal used on ebay. a true dmr would have a free float knights rail though.
