I will be giving a 2-day class, March 29 and 30 2010, at the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy in Richfield, 1/2 hour south of Cleveland.
As OPOTA is a state governement facility, the class is open to LE only, sorry.

2-day AR15 Armorer Course With Ned Christiansen
This two-day class is taught using a Power Point Presentation, pictures and videos, animations, a cutaway AR15 and barrels, authoritative lecture, and Q&A to clearly illustrate the inner workings of the AR15-M16’s system of operation. For newcomers, the Stoner system will be completely demystified, transforming from a confusing jumble of parts into an easily understood, simple set of components, interacting in a logical mechanical sequence. For the more experienced operator / armorer, many of the more subtle aspects of the system, that can still lead to safety, reliability and durability problems, will be thoroughly explored. Recognizing and addressing manufacturing defects and deficiencies, where to find and how to spot wear and tear, routine and deep maintenance, complete and proper disassembly and reassembly will be amply demonstrated and perfomed by students. The common mistakes and dire consequences of improper reassembly will be thoroughly detailed. The differences between .223 and 5.56 ammunition and chambers will be explained. Suggested tools for maintaining a small department armory or a large fleet of weapons will be discussed, demonstrated, and some of Ned’s tools will be available.
Uppers and lowers will be completely disassembled by students. Stock / buffer tube removal and changeout will be demonstrated and performed by students who wish to or have a stock change or receiver plate change that needs doing. Barrel removal and the required tools will be discussed and demonstrated.
Certain aspects of the AR15 will purposely be skipped over. Identification of different models, history lessons, disassembly of the A2 rear sight, and other information not pertinent to real-world issues of keeping the guns running and reliable will not be discussed.
The format will be to stick with the progression of the Power Point as much as possible while allowing a certain amount of relevant digression into interrelated issues as Q&A is conducted.
Aftermarket parts and accessories-- which to have and which not to have-- can be touched upon as dictated by student interest. Time permitting, there may be some discussion of ammo selection, barrier and vehicle penetration with 5.56, and malfunction reduction.
Each student will be provided with a proprietary, 1" thick, three-ring-bound class book, a Brownell’s AR15-specific catalog, a set of gas rings (and some other minor parts if and as needed), Ned’s multi-purpose punch, a Chamber Safe empty chamber indicator, and a 3/16" Allen wrench. Each student can use Ned’s MOACKS tool to properly stake his carrier key screws if necessary, and Ned’s .223-to-5.56 reamer to ensure that his or her chamber is appropriate for duty use.
Students should bring safety glasses (required), a few rags, light cleaning gear, lube, and a towel or mat to work on would be helpful. A large and complete toolbox is not necessary; don’t overcrowd your workspace. Weapons will checked in by staff and the Chamber Safe issued; cases will be set off to the side so as not to cramp the work area and become a tripping hazard. Please have no loaded ammo or magazines accessible. Safety will be stressed and enforced but in the classroom environement it is necessary to move the weapons around while working on them in a group, so, again, no live ammo in the area!
Class will be from 8AM to 4-5PM with a 45-minute lunch break.
3 days out and there are still two or three slots left in this class. Again it is LE only since it’s at an Ohio state police facility.

Well I’d love to set up a little “tour” of WI and the UP where I would do a class every other day for a week or so, get some knowledge out there and a chance to revisit the submarine museum at Manitowoc, and visit some family in the UP.
If you ever do a class not too far from Northern VA I’d attend.
