Hey fellows,
I have a AR10 a4 with 20" bbl. It is a MOA or less rifle (often <MOA since replacing trigger with a Geissele SSA-E trigger :). I’m wanting to add a free float rail to hopefully to increase consistency of groups etc. I’m not really planning on hanging a bunch of stuff off of it (possibly a bipod); will mainly be using for targets and hunting. Would like to limit to ~$300 and would want to be able to install without removing gas block, break etc (IOW, fairly simple installation.). I really don’t care for the looks of the round Armalite free float tube. I know SEARCH is my friend, but I seem to be overwhelmed by the amount of info. I have seen. Please, any info is greatly appreciated; also if there is a great Father’s Day sale I need to jump on; I got overtime on this check so I’m ready.
Thanks for your time,
LP
About the only free float rail that does all of what you are looking for is the Samson Star: http://www.samson-mfg.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SM&Product_Code=STAR10-13-2&Category_Code=308AR_STAR_ARMALITE
I would contact Samson to be sure about the fit.
Midwest does their SS series:

However, it will require a new gas block being put on.
Uses factory barrel nut…that’s what you want, right?

For those of you who have used .308/7.62x51 AR’s with these clamp-on type free float rails, how have you found them holding up to the weight, recoil, heating and cooling cycles, etc. as far as the rail not shifting around, the front BUIS losing zero and general durability especially when using the sling to support shooting positions?
I am wary of this type of design, and have heard other .308 AR users with similar concerns and experiences.
