What are you fellas all using to mount and secure your AR’s in your vehicles?
I have a 90 minute commute to the airport for my job and I recently picked up an Outback Wilderness to make the commute more relaxed and comfortable. It came with a cargo screen that at first I planned to remove, but after looking at it an AR would fit perfectly on the screen and hidden by the seats and under the retractable cover. I park inside the hanger at work so Im not concerned about security there, but rather on the way to/from if I happen to stop at the store, visit with friends, etc.
My first thought was something along the lines of this…
I would not use a chain but simply mount it to the screen and secure the screen mounts better. I was thinking of having an aluminum plate made that matches the lower screen and fitting it to the rear, then place the mount on the front, that way the weapon wouldn’t be visible with the seats in the normal position even with the rear hatch open.
Does anyone here use one of these?
Does anyone know of something similar?
Anything better
Just bear in mind those “locks” can be low skill / no skill picked in about 3 seconds.
Any lock can be picked
Even a pro with custom tools isn’t going to pick the Abus I use in under several minutes
Lastly, I’m only looking to secure against the common “smash & snatch” or “grinder goons” so common in the city
If a “pro” is looking at me as a target they are more likely just to take the whole vehicle
In the mount pictured the weakest link is likely going to be the post the lock mounts to, its not very thick and that company doesn’t list the type of steel used. I have emailed them for an answer and am also looking for similar options.
I used to just toss it in the backseat with a soft case. I’m in northern ME, not downtown NYC… so there is less of a chance of B&E. And I work at a Federal port of entry. If someone really wanted to break into my truck, they will… but I don’t think it is the sharpest knife in the drawer. [emoji1787]
The locker is just for piece of mind that a window won’t be smashed and gun taken. Same with the center console lockbox, if I need to toss my handgun in there (usually just have a reload and my passport). I rarely ever remove my handgun (if I go to Canada, I stop at work and drop in my gun box; AR is already removed before I leave home), but I like options.
The AR is for when I need a larger gun… whether at work or off duty. Could I go more elaborate/better secured? Of course. But this is a perfect balance between security, concealment and ease of access.
So for my next truck I need a crew cab and I like the under seat storage I currently don’t have in my double cab, but I was also thinking of a topper with this (trying to attach images but getting a size limit error) posted link.
Just put this in this weekend. I had to wait for my rear seat monitor delete kits, since they were in the way. It comes with a cable lock which goes around the panel and seat base but hasn’t been put in yet. The locking portion up top is electrified with an adjustable timer module. Juts hide the activation switch somewhere ideal. It has a key fail safe also. Bought the elastic cover for it, so once the AR is mounted the 5% tinting plus the cover keeps it out of sight and out of mind.
