AR 15 recommendations for new ar owner

I am in the process of buying/building my first ar. there are alot of available choices and configurations.

I was hoping for some recommendations from you guys on a upper and bcg. I am planning to use it mainly for home defense/range use. Most (if not all) of my shooting will be inside of 100 yards. I was leaning toward a 1 in 7 or 1 in 9 twist rate, carbine length gas system and dpms upper and bcg. Thoughts???

Also, I may want to register my lower as an sbr in the future. Should I go with a 10 inch upper and attach a flash hider for an overall length of 16 and have it removed later or just go with 16 and get a new barrel if I go this route?

Buy a Colt and get out while you can!:shout:

I’m guessing that you didn’t search prior to creating this thread or your question would have been answered.

I’ve argued and maintained that not everyone needs a military specification carbine but that was with the caveat that those people had some idea of how the gun worked & what they were doing. It does not appear that you are one of those people. I’ll take the guesswork out of it for you: buy a Colt 6920. DPMS/Rock River/Olympic Arms should be avoided for anything serious in nature as they have a reputation for having poor QC and using incorrect materials and improper assembly. Don’t worry about NFA stuff for now.

Have you by chance taken the time to use the search features available on this site? I am guessing not based on your post but I would highly recommend doing some research before posing a question like this here.
IMO, I would steer clear of DPMS, I had made that mistake years ago and would have loved to get the advice to stay away. Sites such as this were unknown to me at the time of my first purchase. Take your time, do the research…then after gathering info, ask questions. You don’t NEED the rifle tomorrow.

All of those points are what I call “boilerplate,” meaning that they’re baseline questions. The stickied threads at the tops of each subforum aboard M4C are there to provide initial answers to boilerplate.

Read the stickied threads here and at the top of the AR Technical subforum, particularly the ones marked “Knowledge Base.”

Use the Search functions to find specific, non-stickied threads relating to your lines of inquiry you’ve developed after reading the stickied threads.

An inactive thread found in a Search may be revived by a new question related to the topic (or new info), and is preferred to a member starting a been-done-before thread under the mistaken assessment that they’re the Very First Guy to ask the question that’s burning in their balls.

The info you seek is out there, with a little research effort. Welcome aboard.
