I have a DPMS style ar10 that I built and am looking for some recommendations on a new grip. Currently I just have the standard DPMS grip, but now that I have my magpul PRS stock and bipod on it I’d like something that looks and feels nicer. I was thinking going with the magpul grip, but thought I’d see what others might recommend first. Attached below is a picture of my rifle.
Grips are 100% user preference. Try out a ton of them and expect to trade/barter a few away before finding one you like. There are a few heavy hitters in the area such as Magpul/BCM. Try them out at your local store if they will let you.
When I still had my AR10, I used a TangoDown large grip. It does have some angle to it but it has a great shape and it fills the hand nicely to help handle that big AR10.
I used the Magpul MIAD on mine.I also have the PRS and like the combo. I liked the adjustability of the MIAD and used that to make the grip a little fatter so to speak. There weren’t quite as many options back when I made my choice, but I like it and see no reason to explore anything else. I do like the newer more vertical grips for SBRs but not on a larger rifle like the AR-10.
Guys, look at the rifle in the OP. Then think about what type of grip makes the most sense for that.
For the heavier target guns built on an AR10 or LR308 frame, I like the Falcon Ergo Tactical Deluxe Sure Grip. It’s profiled similar to the palm swell of the PSG-1 grip. That’s if you have large hands.
If you have smaller hands, consider something suited to your hand, but look for a grip that places the articulation of your trigger finger as straight and to the rear as possible, versus at an angle coming down onto the trigger.
I agree on it being user preference, for the most part. For precision type use, from either a bench or prone, some grips work better than others - namely larger circumference grips that are neither too raked nor too vertical. And placing the hand relatively far back from the trigger, depending on the user’s finger length. For me, while I like a Magpul MOE for general use, I find the Larue APEG much better for slow precision shooting, and that’s what I have on my precision-oriented .308 ARs. Other suggestions would be the larger TangoDown (BG-17) (but it may be too large for some), the Ergo “Deluxe Tactical” which is a very large grip (too large for some people), and maybe the Magpul MIAD. The currently trendy near-vertical grips like the BCM and MOE-K2 are not going to be a good fit for most people, for this kind of shooting. Basic aftermarket grips like the MOE or Hogue would be OK but probably not the best choice. But it depends on the individual’s preference and hand size.
Thanks for the responses. I like the look of the Falcon Ergo Tactical Deluxe, but I don’t have really big hands so I’m concerned it may be too big. The Magpul MIAD seems to be pretty popular, so maybe that’s a safer bet. I just realized my original post doesn’t show the bi-pod I added so perhaps I’ll have to add another picture. As you can hopefully see with my rifle my setup is really geared towards long range target shooting. I have a 20" barrel and the Magpul PRS so I’m not really going for a tactical setup
I have that, and would not recommend it for the OP’s purpose. Not big enough in circumference for precision shooting unless you have small hands. Too vertical, for my taste, for precision shooting. Precision shooting use is different from 3-gun or shoothouse CQB type use. I have used the Mod 1 and Mod 3 for 3-gun style shooting, for that they are fine (still not my first choice).
Ok, so I decided to order the Tango Down and give it a try. I’ll be sure to post again when I get it installed and report how I like it. Thanks again for all the advice!
