I have been looking at different ways to use a sling and am leaning heavily toward the Magpul ASAP with an MS2 sling. I really like the flexibility this offers of being able to use a single point or 2 point sling.
Has anyone used this? What did you think?
My other concern is that I have found some end plates use such hard metal that it was difficult to properly stake. I ended up having to replace my RRA end plate with a BCM end plate so I could stake it properly. Will I be able to stake the Magpul ASAP easily?
Also, I’m a fairly big guy (5’-11", 270 pounds). The pics I’ve seen of the MS2 don’t seem to show much adjustment. Will I have a problem getting the sling adjusted to fit me?
You can stake the ASAP but I’ve staked easier ones. The MS2 really shines as a single point and can work as a 2 point. I find it difficult to adjust in 2 point mode unless the rifle is slung across my back.
If you want an extremely versatile single point then the MS2 and ASAP are a great combo. If you want a good 2 point then get the VCAS from BFG.
I have a couple. It is really nice on an SBR, the sling would probably rock on an SMG, not so much for a 14.5 or 16 inch M4. I am switching to a VTAC, I tried one and really like it better for rifle length weapons.
I find on my 14.5 or 16 inch that the sling tends to dig into my neck if running it in single point mode. If I attach the alligator clip to the swivel point that I have just forward of the delta ring I find that works the best for me because I need to draw the weapon tight against my chest at times and that seems to work. My biggest gripe is the sling digging into my neck if I am not wearing my vest (collar), something I don’t experience with the VTAC. I love the ASAP plate, the design is one of those pure genius things that someone should have came up with 30 years ago. The MS2 sling is well thought out and well built, it just isn’t working for me anymore.
I been using the ASAP and sling at work since they came out. No major problems.
But, I recently switched out the original sling that was black, for a tan one. I think the metal slider is different because the sling can get bound up if pulled in a certain way. It seems the sling has too much room in the slider and can fold on itself.
I replaced the metal rings on my ASAPs with a short loop of 550 cord and I am very happy with that little mod. I also ran a loop of 550 through the “corner” of my old style LMT SOPMOD stock and that serves as a rear attachment point for the MS2 in 2 point mode and I use big ass Daniel Defense rail mounted loop that works well with the big front clip, I can’t find a link to it now, but it works great!
Lets remember that Magpul designed the sling for a specific use in certain situations. They obviously decided not to pad the sling. If you hang your weapon from your sling for long periods of time, this sling is not for you.
The wider the sling, such as in the case of most padded slings, the more friction is produced. This can slow down the sling in certain maneuvers. I see this sling as being useful in “slick” situations with nothing more than a belt rig, though I use it over my armor.
Is speed important? Maybe not for some.
I use it professionally not because of the speed, but because it has certain characteristics that that works what I do with a weapon inside a vehicle. When I drive, my carbine is jammed between my seat and the center console. I sit on the sling to keep control of it. I can’t do this comfortably with other slings.
It also works well as a field expedient drag strap.

To me its more for shooting and less for carrying for long periods of time.
If I spent most of my time carrying the gun I’d probably opt for a 2 point sling that is more comfortable for carrying while still allowing decent use when shooting. The MS2 definately puts some stress on my neck area, and isnt a comfortable width to have it hanging off you all the time.
I like them for what I do, and that is going to the range to practice drills and odd positions. If I was deploying again Id have an ASAP plate if I could, and use the MS2 if carrying the weapon for extended periods wasnt in the works. For extended carry Id switch it out to an Vickers 2 point.
The longest Ive carried a gun in one stint was about 3 days over around 30-40 miles. In my experience you are constantly shifting things to ease pressure points, move over obstacles, etc. The MS2 is more for direct action where you arent going to be carrying the gun in one position for 3 days…
I tried the MS2 and ASAP and eventually got rid of them. My main issue was that I did not want a single point sling all the time and the MS2 did not perform well in a 2 pt config. My main problem was with the alligator clip thing used to secure the sling in 2 pt mode. I was using a CQD sling mount on the forward rail to snap the clip too, and when I released the weapon the clip would lever open and release from the sling mount. I dremeled the heck out of the CQD mount to allow clearance for the hook to rotate, to no avail.
If I were to do it again, I would replace the alligator clip thing with a MASH or HK snap hook. I think Rob’s solution above is a better way to go if you intend to use the sling in a primarily 2 pt config, while sometimes using it as a single point.
i love the ms2 and i like the way its put togehter. and i understand that it was designed to fit a specific function. i just have this unstoppable urge to tinker with stuff.
