I am revamping a few guns NS. I was going to try some Trijicon HD’s on one of my guns. Specifically my TRP. Anyone have experience trying HD’s on a 1911 or a Springfield 1911?
I was considering it a while ago, don’t think I found much so I tried Googling it. In the few pictures that came up, they just looked massively high and awkward. Doesn’t matter to some people but its important for me, especially for my 1911.
They are only available in 1 height.
POA/POI corrections will need to be done to the rear sight.
Springfield has a proprietary front dovetail.
+1. HDs are pretty ugly.
Chuck will it favor high or low typically.
I have a Heinne straight 8 on there now. I might just instal the front and see if I get lucky? It’s the front sight I want.
Any thoughts.
I understand , I didn’t like heinie straight 8’s on my HK45. Because it already had a high bore axis. Just went three dot.
“Chuck will it favor high or low typically.”
Too many variables to hazard a guess.
OK then I’m going High/low! Im going to call them my T HD H/L sights.
I have the Trijicon HD’s on my Colt Rail Gun. They work well.
I’ve got HDs on a 5" 1911 that the late great Joe Bonar built me. They shoot point of aim point of impact at 25yds. They do sit high on the gun but I love the speed in which I can pick up the front sight. For me, they are as fast as a fiber optic front in sunlight along with the added benefit of tritium for low light.
If Trijicon made a set that would fit Wilson’s dovetail front sight cut, my CQB would be running them.
Because they sit high on the gun, they drag slightly in some of my holsters when drawing the gun. That’s their only downside for me.
Not familiar with Joe Bonar, but are any of them Springfield’s. I heard the front sight has a different groove so I was a little concerned.
He was Novak’s head 1911 guy until his untimely death. The gun is a Wilson Combat frame/slide built at Novaks and it utilizes the Novak dovetail cut for the front sight. The HDs are only available to fit the Novak cut and the Colt cut as far as I understand.
Why don’t you just paint your front sight?
I actually bought some kit to paint front sights, it was cheap and it was cheap. Should have just tried finger nail polish.
I installed the TRIJ HD AND Dawson precision front fiber optic.
The HD’s went on good, the rear very nicely , great fit. The front went on too easy, it had to be tapped in, but not much force needed. So we put some JD WELD to secure it. Anyone ever done this with or without success.
The Custom MC Operator now sports a rear 10-8 and Dawson front. If it shoots POA / POI, I will be thrilled.
The front Dawson was a perfect fit. Tapped in with the perfect amount of force. Again, fingers crossed for POA / POI.
MY HD’s didn’t have the set screw in it. I don’t feel I need it, but doesn’t hurt. Can you buy those readily. I have not checked yet.
Range report tomorrow.
Call Trijicon and have them mail you one. It should have come with it.
Can speak directly for 1911 use but I have them installed on my m&p and I LOVE THEM! Yes they do sit a tad high but they are well worth it. Would love to hear your thoughts on them now that they are installed.
Yes, I have them on my MNP’s and HK’s too. They sit even higher on the 1911, but I do still really dig them. Shot mine today to test fire some ammo that Mark rolled up. I highly recommend.

You guys notice any issues with longer range/precision shots because of the wider front sight?
I don’t mind a little air around my front post. However, the orange dot is kinda of Bulky, more tactical than precision IMHO.
