Just watched it for the first time with extremely low expectations.
Seems to be in the tradition of Sin City and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Visually impressive, sometimes stunning but at the same time bordering on nonsensical while going from the real world to a fantasy world and often combining a retro past with the future.
Now these films are the kind of thing I normally hate as I don’t really go for the fantasy land stuff too often. As a “for example” I think Avatar is one of the worst movies ever made. Additionally I generally despise CGI, unless it works. Seems to me about 90% of the time it does not.
I’ll freely admit I was drawn to Sky Captain mostly to see Angelina Jolie and to Sin City to see Jessica Alba. Sin City, IMO was the weakest of the three and Jessica Alba was the highlight. But I really can’t say the same for Sky Captain, the 1930/40s serial feel just worked. I still have no idea what the movie was actually about but it was a lot of fun to watch.
Sucker Punch was much, much darker in theme but still visually impressive. Even managed to incorporate some rare themes like Tengu (Japanese goblins, though presented more as demons) and the German “robotic armies” from golden age comic books. And like Sky Captain they mix the old with the new, flying around in B-25 Mitchells and using HK UMPs.
Sucker Punch also has some decent gun porn including a Lewis Gun here and there. Also written and directed by Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300) so it might find some fans here. And a bunch of cute chicks never hurt, even if the storyline is brutal and depressing, almost a “noir.”
Had some very hot girls, and some cool guns, I was pretty disapointed in the movie. Its rare for me to not like a movie.
I wouldnt put it in the same category as Sin City, I love that movie, I like the style where everyone ties into the story through different parts. Like the movie Crash. VERY good film.
Sucker Punch I guess I will have to watch again, I wanted to like it…something was off about it
I liked Sucker Punch. The fight against the Steempunk German soldiers was awesome. The movie had good music too. I thought Sky Captian was an awesome movie too. Never saw the Watchmen.
We enjoyed Sucker Punch also. But I have to say my favorite kick ass chick movie is Haywire. I noticed only a couple of scenes Gina had a double. It’s up for stream now on netflix…
I checked it out and was pretty disappointed. Despite her MMA status and her attempts to do it for real without resorting to absurd “charlies angels” CGI nonsense, the fights lacked significant credibility. Of course this is the problem with most “GI Jane” movies where a 140 female begins to kick the shit out of a half dozen guys who are much stronger.
I’ve only seen a handful of females who can actually fight, even fewer who can fight and defeat stronger opponents. Most females simply aren’t built to inflict serious injury and even fewer are built to absorb serious injury.
Sadly I’ve seen LOTS of females who “think” they can fight, due to martial arts training, cardio kickboxing or simply having developed muscles and more than a few got into fights with men when they could have walked away because they thought they were “kick ass” girls. In most cases they did just enough damage to really piss the other person off and paid dearly for it.
I’m all for females getting in shape, learning to fight, studying martial arts, etc. and I think anything is better than nothing. But they need to maintain a realistic sense of their abilities.
We got up and left the movie, it was so bad, so maybe it got better after the steam punk germans.
And I really wanted to see it because I loved the 300 and Sky Captain and I really liked the previews. But damn, it sucked. But I am old enough that I need a story that I can follow and enjoy to go with cool visuals.
We were using free tickets my wife got from the local CoC, so I didn’t get too mad.
I HATED the Watchmen. I actually said out loud “If I see one more blue goober, I am going to throw up.”
Most of the theatre laughed.
I never read the graphic novels so maybe that would make it better, but I thought it was terrible, even without seeing blue dicks every other scene.
I never saw Avatard aka Dances with Smurfs over my disgust with the stupid and overused and racist story of the “Evil White Corporation vs Good Noble Savages of Nature” dichotomy.
(To put this in perspective, I also hated Pulp Fiction and I thought the Godfather series was one of the most boring movie series that I have ever sat through.)
Watchmen is by far my favorite comic/graphic novel film adaption to date. Superb.
As for Haywire, the wife and I did not like it. I was hoping it was going to be a female Ronin or Bourne or something. As for kick ass chick flicks pretty much anything with Milla Jovovich casted as the lead female will do; The Fifth Element, Resident Evil franchise, etc.
I saw Sucker Punch and enjoyed it though I saw it more like a bunch of separate visually stunning scenes strung along flimsily along a very thin thread of a story. Chicks with guns works though.
I did see Dances with Smurfs and have never been so close to gouging my eyes out ever (okay, I take that back - Highlander 2 which I saw as a teen scarred me for life).
I bought the Watchmen series when it was first published over here, and the movie was a great adaptation - though I was displeased with the end as it weered away from the original material (which it had followed so closely up to that point).
I also enjoyed Haywire but had no expectations before seeing it.
Sucker punch isn’t to bad if you’re in a really pensive[?] depressed mood and you can get really engrossed in the back story, not just the “chicks with guns” theme.
I frankly liked the beginning, and the end.
Which, all things being said, is fairly indicative of the overall quality of the movie.
However, I too did thoroughly enjoy the steampunk Nazi sequence. I’ve always been a bit of a WW2 nut, and I happen to like me some Nazi badguys- in over half a century NO other “bad guy” template has yet to top the machine-istic unrelenting badassery of those guys.
A lot of other BG templates, in the end if you really dissect them are like “oh, that’s cute…”. But when Nazis roll up- you know things are about to get serious.
Watchmen- I hated it.
Ok, I liked the opening sequence, and the whole “superheros gone wrong” theme. And a couple of the characters.
But you know a movie sucks when you start fast-fowarding halfway through it.
Could just have been all the blue dong though… :laugh:
But they could have done SO much more with that movie that would have made it SO much more… better.
