I’m LE and I usually just run rifle mags out of my cargo pocket in class. When I grab my rifle at work I usually end up grabbing a spare mag and dumping it in my left cargo pocket. Very rarely do I grab my chest rig from the car while at work.
I like hearing it from LE that they keep it simple.
Pockets are just as effective if not MORE so.
I understand the need for valuable tools, but it doesnt mean you HAVE to use it. Just because soemthing is on the market, doesnt mean you have to buy it up.
I prefer to kep it simple and NOT carry a bunch of SHIT that I dont need where as I can get the same results without it
I see nothing wrong with “pulling mags from pockets” for you since that’s more fitting to your lifestyle. I’m not LEO/Mil either so I don’t train with armor or chest rigs and such. I run a pretty simple and slick set up with mags on my belt in kydex carriers which is the same as I carry daily. Only difference is that for a class I will add a couple rifle mags in Kydex carriers to my belt.
Totally agree with you BCm and I (non-LE and no longer .mil) don’t use chest rigs, etc. either. But I can think of reason to use such items even though, realistically, we’d never be using them in “real life”… and that’s to help keep focus on other skills while you’re training.
My example is for handguns (sorry, i know the OP was about carbines, but I think the point is the same). I start my defensive handgun classes wearing exactly what I carry daily… IWB holster and one spare mag. But usually I’ll switch to OWB and double or triple spare mags about halfway through class. The reason is that after dozens of draws/reholsters, I find I’m starting to get mentally tired of draw/reholster practice enought that it takes away from other things like trigger control, sight focus, etc.
Yes, it’s important to put them all together for train-like-you-fight or whatever. That’s why I do it 1/2 the day. But personally I like to make some things easier so I can devote energy to refining other specific skills.
So I can see why something like a first line-ish belt or chest rig might still have practical value for a non-LE, non-.mil trainee.
ETA: And by “draw/reholster practice” I mean the extra motion associated with concealment, which is not a big deal, except for the fact I need to keep up with everyone else who’s not concealing for class. I don’t like practicing speed reholsters.
When I grab my long gun, my spare mag goes in my back offside BDU pocket, which I keep empty for this purpose. Even with my plates on, the back pocket is my first reload, since I’m more used to it.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Keeping it simple wil let you A) work your gear on the range the same way you would in real life, and B)let you focus more on the training, and have less gear to fight or otherwise deal with.
I made the mistake of sticking a galco dual pouch in my back jeans pocket. Tried to grab the mag and it got hung, then the whole deal came out. What a mess. This is pistol mags btw.
I am fortunate in that most of my paints are 5.11 rip-stops in OD provided free by work, I have like 20 pair now, they breed like rabbits. They have a built-in pistol mag pouch over the left thigh.
I go casual after hours simply by removing my uniform shirt and replacing it with a Tee-Shirt.
I’ve done it in competition before & it works just fine for me. I don’t see the need to wear a chest rig for one, maybe two mag changes. I’ll wear a one mag belt holster, & if I need any more than that, back left pocket it is. It makes it much less cumbersome.
When I’m protecting clients CONUS I use my pockets for Mags etc.
It’s fine & just remember to refill if you use.
Obviously BA yes, can’t wear Plate Carrier or Vest in public generally on private detail.
