When buying my Aimpoint m3 I did a lot of research before, and did a bit on the LaRue mounts. I, however, made a mistake and got the LT152 mount for my flat top AR upper. It is made for the RAS II rail, and other rised rails.
Ive been running this optic for months and never thought twice about it being low, I actually like it cause being up close its not as much as a hold over, though I thought it was normal. The mount helped to hold zero even when the optic was taken off, and when I dropped it out of a friends truck, the Aimpoint and LaRue mount are rock solid.
Now, I am laughing at my ignorance. The main disadvantage is that I cannot run my iron sights with this low mount. Well I have used the RDS with the iron sights up, but I had close one eye to line them up, and with a Troy front sight the dot, if not super bright, sits right on top.
So I am running a big disadvantage not being able to have the iron sights up?
It’s not something I would ever do, depending on your use of the weapon, I’d reconsider it. If you’re in the LE or Mil world, I’d say switch it out. If the optic fails, you need to quickly be able to use your irons. If you’re only using the gun on the weekend or whatever, I’d say it isn’t that big of a issue, but something I still wouldn’t do. If its your home defense gun, I’d also reconsider it. Optics work great until they die, I know and work with a lot if guys that rely too much on optics and don’t have the basic iron sight knowledge.
Well my reasoning has always been that I’d probably still keep the sights down even if I had a lower 1/3 cowitness setup.
I have been considering a T-1 which I would use the Tall mount for it. But am not sure yet, as the T-1 would have to collect dust, or my M3 would until I get at least a new upper. Though I would probably but the m3 on my shotgun with that low mount if it would work.
