…is just waiting around for things to get back to “normal” but nobody is doing anything about it?
I see this in the retail businesses and restaurants we frequent. Nobody is going out of their way to provide stellar service or quality. They might slash prices a bit, but that’s it. This seems odd to me both from an employee standpoint (surely there’s someone that would be happy to do a better job for the same, or even less, money) as well as the business standpoint (if just one business became known for better quality and service at the same price they’d kill the competition).
I see this in the housing market. I check out realtor.com, I find houses I’m interested in looking at, and I contact the realtors. Almost none get back to me. Simple questions like “is it a short sale and if so do they have bank approval at this price?” go unanswered. Even easier questions like “when can we come take a look at it?” similarly go without reply. Is the market really so great that these people have more business than they can handle?
I see this in my business. The market is tough, and getting tougher, yet nobody wants to do anything different or innovative. Everyone seems to think if we tighten our belts (read, layoffs) and wait it out and keep the status quo we’ll (read, they’ll) get through it. No attempt at trying something new, no attempt at changing the process that’s broken, etc.
Not only do none of these people seem to think that they need to try a little harder, but they don’t even seem to have made a conscious decision. It’s simply go along with the flow and wait for someone else to fix everything. In fact, attempts at making changes and innovating are squashed, perhaps because it makes those that won’t adapt look bad?
I gotta say, I’m frustrated as shit. How does anyone expect things to improve if everyone is going to wait around for someone else to do it?
