Anybody have a "latex core" mattress

This may be a weird topic to put on a gun forum, but I have noticed alot of guys on here tend to have some very out of the ordinary things.

I need a new mattress, current one is at least 15 years old and is sagging in the middle pretty bad. I used to live by a guy that worked in a furniture store(rooms to go or something like that). He swore by “latex core” mattress’s and said that even though they were expensive they were the way to go. They dont suffer from problems that a traditional coil spring mattress has. He also said most CEO’s of large companies, celebrities, etc… are buying latex core mattress’s. I have tried to do some research and it seems that most of the ones that are offered at traditional stores use a cheaper method(talalay or something like that) of producing the latex for the core and to look for one using the natural method(dunlop process), however none of the big name ones use this method or the stores dont know. I have found a couple places online that sell the ones with the better core but these things aint cheap no matter where you get them from, $2000+. Most of them also have 20+ year warranties where as a traditional spring mattress seem to top out at about 10 years.

The place I have looked at, and it has gotten good reviews, is www.habitatfurnishings.com, and specifically the “skybed” model.

So I am looking for some input on these if anybody has one. Please dont try to steer me toward an inner spring mattress, those are a dime a dozen and I can lay on any and every one ever produced locally.

My dad has one and loves it. I may buy one soon. I think he is using egg crate foam on top to allow a little better airflow.
I have stayed at hotels with them and they are nice. I don’t know if they are anything magical or life changing. Unfortunately you won’t know if it works for you until you try it yourself.

We have had one for a little over 7 years now. When we got married, a family friend who owns a mattress business gave us a queen sized latex bed as a gift. Last spring we wanted to upgrade to a king size, so after talking to the same guy, we were about to have our existing queen used as base to build up a king size. That saved us a lot vs. buying a new one, even over a bare bones traditional version. I am an stomache sleeper and my wife is not so ours actually has the two sides at slightly different firmnesses.

Beds being a very personal thing, it’s hard to say much, but we’re very pleased with ours.

Thanks for the few replys, I knew a couple people would have them.

LOKNLOD: I have heard that they have different firmness’s(density I guess is the correct term) of the latex throughout the mattress to basically support the different parts of the body correctly. I am not looking for a custom one side is different than the other as I mostly sleep alone.

Thanks again and if anybody has anything to add please do.

We sold off the waterbed and bought a latex because my wife’s back did not like the waterbed.

She loves it but not me. Feels really comfortable but I wake up sore many mornings. If it is not my back then it seems to bother my shoulders (I have bursitis in both).

You may love it. Personally, I would go back to the waterbed anytime but having my wife’s back not hurt is waaay worth it.

We thought of going with a latex bed. Our backs were killing us. We tried a few out and they were comfortable. Then we realized that they can get very hot. Living in Florida figured this might be a problem. So we looked at a Select Comfort “Sleep Number Bed” and holy frijoles, that thing is awesome. I get firm, she gets soft and our backs have been having parties ever since. You might want to check that type of bed out as well.

Which latex core beds did you try(if you can remember) because them getting hot is definitely not something they do, they breath really well. At least that is what every review and education literature I have read says.

Sleep number beds are the devils invention. I travel for a living and I always dread seeing a Radisson on my hotel sheet(luckily they always have 10% of the rooms in the hotel with regular beds).

Tempurpedic. My wife bought one in 2000, we’ve been together since 2006. It has been through 2 moves. It shows no signs of wear and is the most comfortable thing I have ever slept on. She bought hers because she got hit as a pedestrian in a crosswalk and it messed her back up a bit (that and a fair bit of time waiting to get her legs in working order) I have never had back problems per se, but my back used to creak and pop like an old row boat . . . it doesn’t anymore.

I know I’ve stayed at hotels with latex beds. Try to book with one on your next trip. I’ve heard they can be sweaty too. I would listen to real experience not the literature.

We have one of those, and I sleep on the couch most of the time because when I sleep in the bed I wake up with a very sore and stiff back.

Its also very hot. I wake up sweaty besides the pain and stiffness. I have back issues anyways but I can sleep on the couch, and its only sore/stiff for 30 minutes after I wake up.

tempurpedic is not a latex core mattress. It is a coil spring mattress with a memory foam top on it.

I dont know of any hotels(save for maybe the ritz or something of that caliber) that has latex core beds. I have stayed in Westons, Doubletree’s and the W that all have their own line of mattress’s that are regarded as the best in the hotel industry, but they are all coil spring mattress’s.

I was thinking memory foam then. That is probably the complaint about a hot bed too. Now you have me interested. How expensive are they?

Latex core mattress’s(true latex core and not a 1" piece of latex surrounded by 4" of poly foam) seem to be starting a little north of $2000 for a queen.

I am trying to do my research into these things and there is so much info and misleading statements by the different manufacturers. Some say latex core, but its only 1" of latex surrounded by poly foam(not what I want), some dont tell you, some say latex core, but its really an inner spring mattress that is encased in latex.

I am about to say screw it and just get a nice expensive inner spring mattress. I am going to do a few more days of research before I decide though.

We bought a Stearns & Foster Queen 5 or 6 years ago. We also bought a nice maple bed from Moose Head. The bed frame was a freaking joke the display model was a head and footboard with a 12" side board. When it was delivered I was horrified to see one board 4"x 3/4" with a 3" x 3"center support. I bought something called a bed bridge and then some 6" wide poplar slats for aditional support. My point is make sure you know what you’re getting so you don’t end up getting screwed. Also read the warranty. ALWAYS have a matress cover on bed when the 2 year old kid or dog wets the bed and stains the mattress there goes your warranty. Our high cost bed has a great warranty against impressions but with the stain it is a no go.

I would also suggest a King size bed!

I am not an overly heavy person, 6’1" @ 240 pounds. I have 2 herniated discs and need a good mattress or I feel it for hours after I get up, I still enjoy running and jumping around with a few limitations.

Now then, I bought a $1600 piece of latex shit when I came over here. I tried it in the store, the sales monkey recomended it, it looked fine.

Two months after we got it home there was a body pit at each side where we both sleep. You need crampons and a decent belay to get yourself out in the mornings. There was no way you could comfortably roll around th thing at night because you were stuck in the bloody pit.

In the UK, because of my back, I had also invested in the best mattress available. In fact it is made by the company that makes the mattress the Queen sleeps on. I went to the factory showroom, tried them out and made my choice, ordered it, they only make to order, $700 for what we call a single mattress, two singles make a king. When it arrived it was like sleeping on a cloud, bloody marvellous.

With the piece of latex rubbish I had wasted my money on being an absolute piece of crap I was determined to find the best available over here in the USA. I googled, I read, I googled some more. The result of my research was that, even here in the USA, the mattress I had in the UK is regarded as the numero uno by afficionados. So much so infact that if you buy one of their mattresses in NY City or Dallas you will pay from $7000 to $25000.00 for it…yes, I was shocked too.

So, I rang up a mattress store in the UK, ordered two, htye were made, I had them delived to a shipping firm where they were crated, had them air freighted over, they cleared customs last week on wednesday and I am finally enjoyiong sleep again.

Expensive? If I had bought two Stearns and Foster top of the range single mattresses from Macy’s it would have cost me $2500, incl delivery. To get these two handmade, made to order, best mattresses in the world to my bedroom in the USA from the UK factory…$2540.00.

Worth it? Oh yeah. Being able to walk is important to me.

Latex? Never, ever, again.

What is supposed to be the benefit of this latex core mattress?

I have been sleeping on a soft-side waterbed for 12 years and would buy another one in a heartbeat. This is not a big bag of water but is a hollow mattress made of foam on the sides and a board on the bottom and a thin top to protect the bladder with a water bladder inside that is filled with fiber of some sort so that you don’t get waves. You use normal bedsheets. I have a memory foam thing on top of it – 2.5". I am so used to it and I can lay on it for 10-12 hours without issue (about 6’ 2" 240lbs) and get up and feel just fine. I have a real hard time at hotels since I am used to sleeping on this… The only down side of going out of town to trainings.

We were weary of the memory foam/latex for a bit but ended up with an Ikea latex-memory foam hybrid and I wont ever go back. I would do some research on the foam used, often times you can find some of the cheaper mattresses using the same stuff as the big boys.

The Tempurpedic mattress saved my life as far a I’m concerned. When I had a broken back it was a joy to sleep on!

Nasa use in in their astronaut seats…you could always ask them. Only kidding.

It is used in the production of aircraft flight crew seats and high end racing car seats. If you check around some of the kit plane catalogues and magazines there are sometimes sources for memory foam.

A mate of mine in Florida has a tempurpedic mattress. He loves them. The only problem he has with it is that because more of your body is in contact with it when asleep it tends to keep him warmer at night…not so good in the tropics.

very interested in this. Can I go to one of the show rooms in the USA and sample them and then call the company in the UK and order that model or do they have different models for different parts of the world? Would it be easier to go to the UK and do everything at one time(I can go for free)? What shipping firm did you use(I get a very healthy fedex discount as well as being able to use Continental/United airlines freight services)? Do you remember the cost of the mattress, shipping, etc…? PM me if you wish.
